Introduction

The unparalleled prosperity of the post-WWII period led to rising standards of living of nearly all Americans.  But, some were left behind.  President Lyndon Johnson, moved to help the poor and working-classes by his own youthful experiences with poverty and a strong conviction that America can provide for its citizens, turned his enormous political talents to making this a reality.
