It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of January - time is going so quickly.

This week started with an assembly where we launched Jupiter Choices. This is an exciting new initiative where we will be exploring skills that can be used to help solve playground issues together. Our key theme for the first assembly was considering the difference between big problems where we need an adult to help us, and smaller issues where children can try to solve them on their own before seeking help if they need it. The children had some great ideas and the drama club did a wonderful job of demonstrating some of these.

Many of our Year Five children have participated in Bikeability cycling training this week. This has been led by professional coaches and the children have worked very hard and done really well, despite the weather! Thank you to all of the parents and carers who have helped prepare and transport the bikes.

On Saturday some of our children will be participating in the Hertfordshire County Cross-Country championships at St Margaret’s School. Good luck to everyone who is participating in this event - go for it. Thank you to all of the families and friends involved with transporting and supporting our children. I hope the weather is kind and that you enjoy the event.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you in February for another wonderful month at Jupiter!

Learning this week

This week in Reception

This week in Reception we have been creating our own characters to replace ‘the gingerbread Man’. Some particularly favourites have been cookie girl, pizza man, gingerbread alicorn and steak cat!

In Maths we have been making comparisons by saying which group has ‘more’ and which has ‘fewer’. We have also been learning to identify when groups are ‘equal’ or ‘not equal’. The children have started to plan their bookmarks which we will be making, as well as working hard on our letter formation in handwriting.

This week in Year 1

This week in Year One the children have been developing their addition knowledge focusing on using number bonds to add numbers together. The children have been learning about patterns within numbers. They have learnt about what is the same and different between examples such as 3 + 4 = 7 and 13 + 4 = 17. In English, the children have been developing their vocabulary to use within poems based on the story ‘I can Catch a Monster’. They have been using creatures and monsters as inspiration to create adjectives and verbs. The children have learnt about how we measure temperature and discussed as a class why it is important to know what the temperature is in Science. In Geography, the children created their own aerial diagram of the classroom.

This week in Year 2

This week in Year Two the children have finished their learning on money. They have worked extremely hard on this tricky concept and any practice with coins you can do moving forward would be beneficial. We have begun our new unit on equal and unequal groups which the children grasped quickly. In English the children have planned their innovated journey story based on Sunny the meerkat and it has been lovely to see them begin to apply their learning to this story. Next week, they will write their story. In Science, the children have worked hard to look at things that babies can do, what toddlers can do, and what they will be able to do when they are teenagers and adults. The children had lots of fun discussing their plans from driving a car to getting a job!

This week in Year 3

This week in Year Three In Literacy, we have been working creatively to write our own innovated versions of The Great Kapok Tree. Our Maths lessons have focused on measurement, where we have been practicing using millimetres, centimetres, and metres. In Science, we continued learning about forces by experimenting with magnets to observe attraction and repulsion. We also stepped back in time during History to compare the layout of ancient Roman towns with modern-day settlements. It has been a wonderful week of learning in Year 3!

This week in Year 4

This week in Year Four we have been completing our Spring assessments in Maths, Reading, SPaG and Spelling. The children have worked really hard and we have been so impressed with their resilience and concentration. In History, we looked at what everyday life was like for the Anglo-Saxons. A highlight of the week was in PSHE, when the children created and then presented presentations on how to help someone who is disappointed. We saw lots of lovely talk of resilience, kindness and what it means to be a good friend. Well done year four!

This week in Year 5

This week in Year Five many of the children have been participating in Bikeability sessions, developing their cycling skills on the road. Despite the cold and wet conditions, they demonstrated great resilience and determination and the instructors have been most impressed. In the classroom we have been writing our innovative Beowulf versus Grendel’s Mother stories with some very impressive results. In Maths we have been continuing to practise and extend our understanding of long multiplication, while in Humanities we found out about the impact on the Earth of mobile phone production. Great work Year 5!

This week in Year 6

This week in Year Six we’ve been focusing on converting fractions into decimals, helping the children see that they are simply two different ways of describing the same value.

In Literacy, we focused on interesting words and phrases we could use to describe a setting. Once we banked our vocabulary, the children used their new words to write the opening of a flashback. We continued to explore the rainforest in geography and discovered just how much of our food originates there. From cacao beans and coffee to bananas and pineapples. The children produced their own infographics to map out the journey our food takes before we are able to enjoy it.

We are proud to have a dedicated and enthusiastic team of parent teacher association (PTA) at our school. The PTA plays a vital role in bringing together families , staff and the wider community to support and enhance the education experience of all our children. Through fundraising events, volunteer support, and community initiatives, the PTA helps provide valuable resources, enrich learning opportunities, and create a positive, inclusive environment for everyone. We welcome all parents and carers to get involved, whether by joining the committee, helping at events, or sharing ideas every contribution makes a difference! The Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving at school Thursday 5 February. It will be open from 3.15 until 3.45 every day until Wednesday 11 February. Please wait until Years 3 and 4 have been dismissed and then join us to purchase your child a book. The side gate will be open until 3.45 to allow you to exit that way.
