It has been amazing to have everyone back after the half term break - we hope you all had an amazing time off. It has been an action packed week here at Jupiter, despite the rather mixed weather. Year Two enjoyed Scootability sessions and there was a wonderful trip to St Alban’s cathedral for Y3. Thank you for all involved in helping to make these events happen.

The children have enjoyed exploring the new playground markings that have now been installed thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Jupiter PTA. It is so exciting to see the way these are enabling the children to have active playtimes. Thank you to everyone who helps to run the PTA events and for those who attend them as well. Don’t forget our next exciting event is the Summer Party that will be held on Friday 3rd July between 3.30pm and 5.30pm - it will be great to see you all there!

Our Y4 children have been completing their MTC (multiplication tables check) in school this week and next week our Y1 and some of our Y2 children will complete their Phonics Check. The children have all been working really hard to learn these essential skills - well done everyone, we are so proud of you. Thank you also to all of the family members who have helped to support the children in their learning, this is such an essential partnership and it makes such a difference!

As many of you will know, we had an unexpected fire alarm, just as the children were starting to leave at the end of the day on Monday. Well done to everyone for remaining calm and waiting so patiently while we confirmed that it was a false alarm. We practise through fire drills regularly so we know how to help keep everyone safe but the time of day made things particularly interesting and everyone did so well! A huge well done to the children for following the process so well and a massive thank you to all of the parents and carers who were so patient.

Learning this week

This week in Reception

This week in Reception we have been starting our focus on ‘Farmer Duck’. The children came into a terrible mess which must have been left by the lazy farmer! We worked as a team to tidy it up and have enjoyed using the story as a prompt for our writing this week. In Maths, we have been finding different ways to make an amount and tried hard to use ‘part-whole- models. We also enjoyed painting our own bee models and have added black strips of paper, eyes, wings and a stinger. The children have really enjoyed this and it has been a great start to our Topic on ‘Bees’.

This week in Year 1

This week in Year One we have started looking at money in our maths lessons. We started by unitising amounts and moved onto recognising coins and notes. The children developed their knowledge of counting in different amounts by counting coin amounts such as counting 5p’s. In English, we have been developing our vocabulary by learning about suffixes and prefixes. We have learnt about the verb endings ‘er’, ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ and how these change the meaning of words. We have also learnt about how adding the prefix ‘un’ changes the meaning of words. In Science, we have started our plants unit. The children demonstrated an amazing understanding of associated vocabulary and could label confidently. A real highlight was pulling plants apart and putting them into the correct categories. In Geography, we have located the United Kingdom on a map and will move onto learning about each individual country within the United Kingdom over the next few weeks.

Just a reminder that next week the children will be completing their phonics screening check. The children have been working incredibly hard with their phonics and we wish them all the best of luck.

This week in Year 2

This week in Year Two the children have been very busy. As well as a busy week learning, the children took part in Scooterbility. Luckily, the rain stayed at bay long enough for all children to take part. They came back from their sessions energised with lots of knowledge about how to use a scooter safely. In Maths, we have looked at tally charts and block charts. The children were able to create their own charts as well as answer questions based on the results - well done. In Literacy, the children have practised alliteration as well as learning the vocabulary needed for their new text in Literacy. We have started our new History topic based around Kings and Queens and this week we have compared what the monarchy used to be able to do to what they are able to do now. The children have also begun their assessments which we will continue next week.

This week in Year 3

This week in Year Three we have been super busy! On top of all the learning, we have had a visitor and a trip out. On Tuesday we had a visitor from ‘Hertfordshire Road Safety Team’ who talked to us about good places to cross the road in order to keep ourselves safe. We also learnt that the new style of crossing was called a ‘Toucan’ crossing rather than a ‘Pelican’ crossing. On Thursday we visited St Albans Cathedral, where we learnt about how the Romans built the town of Verulamium and how ‘Alban’ stood against the Romans to help a christian priest. With the children dressing up and acting out the story. We also had the chance to make mosaics. The children did a wonderful job at representing Jupiter and were a great credit to us. Well done Year 3!

This week in Year 4

This week in Year Four we began our new unit in English, where we started to look at a number of persuasive writing techniques including the use of imperative verbs, adjectives to convey emotion and more. In Maths, we have begun to look at time, starting with days, weeks, months and then moving onto comparing hours and minutes.

We have also begun the MTC, with the first groups of children completing their tests. We have been so proud of how they have done, well done year four!

This week in Year 5

This week marked an exciting start to our summer term in Year Five! In Literacy, we launched our new unit on informative texts, with students enthusiastically writing about topics they know inside out. Over in maths, we have been re-exploring decimals, focusing on filling in any gaps in knowledge to build a really solid foundation. Meanwhile, our Design Technology sessions have been a huge hit; the children have loved learning about the mechanics of bridges and are already busy designing and building their own. It has been absolutely lovely to witness their natural curiosity spark back to life as we dive into this new term.

This week in Year 6

What a fantastic, action-packed week it has been in Year 6! We kicked things off by dreaming big, drawing our future ambitions and discussing the tools we will need to succeed in life. In Maths, we tackled metric measures, mastering how to convert units by multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000. Our Literacy lessons were inspired by the touching short film The Present, which the children used to write moving story recounts packed with powerful, emotive language. Finally, in History, we completed our impressive double-page spreads on Anne Frank, and the teaching team was blown away by just how much information the children remembered over the half-term break. We are incredibly proud of their focus and enthusiasm this week, and we hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing weekend!

Turning Attendance into a Habit: Top Tips for Families

We know that the morning rush can sometimes feel like a marathon. To help keep attendance high and stress levels low, here are a few tried-and-tested tips from our community to help your child stay in the Green zone:

The Night-Before Reset: Laying out uniforms, packing school bags, and hunting down missing shoes the night before can save valuable minutes (and stress!) in the morning.
Consistent Bedtimes: A good night's sleep makes waking up a lot easier. Keeping a steady sleep routine—even towards the end of the week—works wonders for morning motivation.
Talk it Up: Encourage excitement about the school day by asking what they are looking forward to, whether it's seeing a friend, an art project or playtime.

When to Stay Home vs. When to Come to School

It can be tricky to know whether to send your child to school when they are feeling slightly under the weather. As a general rule of thumb:

Mild sniffles and coughs? If they don't have a temperature and seem generally well in themselves, they are usually fine to come to school. We will always call you if they take a turn for the worse during the day.
Fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea? These are clear signs they need to rest at home. Remember, children must stay home for 48 hours after their last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea.

Important Reminder: We are a Nut-Free School

We need your help! We have a number of children and staff members with severe nut allergies. To keep them safe, please double-check that your child’s packed lunches and snacks do not contain any type of nut.

As a reminder, please avoid sending in treats like Pick Up! biscuits, as they contain hazelnuts (some wrappers have recently been found on the playground). We really appreciate your teamwork in keeping our school environment safe for everyone!
