2. Log in to Google with your school email and your password.
3. Once on the Clever page, click on the Study Island icon (look for the palm tree!)
4. In Study Island, find your English class and click on the week's assignment.

OPTION 3: ThinkCerca.com- Practice reading and writing narratives (Students will read and analyze a narrative and create their own narrative piece)
OPTION 4: Newsela and Vocabulary.com - Practice informational reading and vocabulary development (Students will read and analyze informational articles focused on a particular topic; students will also complete vocabulary practice in Vocabulary.com)

OPTION 1: Informational Reading - Analyzing Author's Purpose (RI.9.6:Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.)
Students will read 10 short informational passages and analyze the author's purpose in each
OPTION 2: Analyzing Literature - Plot (RL.9.5 Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise).
Students will read 8 short excerpts from grade-level literature and analyze the authors' choices in plot development.
OPTION 3: Persuasive Writing: (C 9.7: Compose routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a variety of tasks, purposes, and audiences.)
Students will respond in writing to a prompt scored according to the Kentucky Writing Scoring Rubric
OPTION 4: Narrative Writing: (C 9.3: Use narratives strategically in other modes of writing, utilizing effective technique, well-chosen details and well-structured sequences for an intended purpose)
Students will respond in writing to a prompt scored according to the Kentucky Writing Scoring Rubric

THIS WEEK:
Day 1: View instructional video on elements of argument and respond to questions to show understanding.
Day 2 - 3: Read and annotate an article and analyze its elements of argument.
Day 4: Create a claim, reasons, evidence, and explanation in response to a writing prompt.
Day 5: Write an argument piece in response to a prompt using argument elements previously constructed on day 4.

This week in English 1:
Day 1: View instructional video and practice scoring student-written arguments via a provided rubric.
Day 2: View instructional video and revise your claim, supporting reasons, and evidence from last week (Alternative for those who did not complete last week: create a claim, supporting reasons, and evidence)
Day 3: View instructional video and assess your own argument writing from last week using the rubric. Identify 3 improvements to raise your writing at least one level. (Alternative for those who did not complete last week's work: Write an argument piece in response to a prompt using the elements you created yesterday, self-assess, and identify 3 improvements to raise your writing at least one level)
Days 4- 5: Use these two days to REVISE your writing by implementing the improvements identified on Day 3.
