Module 5
Nature and natural cycles can be observed using our senses
This module our lines of inquiry focus on the life cycles of plants. We have worked hard as a class to set up a garden area in our outside space. We cleared the bedding stands and filled them with fresh soil ready for planting. We planted different seeds into the planters including herbs, carrots and radish. We are now responsible for looking after them by watering them regularly.
DM - Understanding of the world
Explore the natural world around them.
Describe what they see, hear and feel whilst outside.
Life Cycle of a Bean
After listening to the story of Jasper's Beanstalk and Jack and the Beanstalk, we decided to plant our own bean seeds. We learnt about the life cycle of a bean plant and how it is a cycle. We are enjoying watching the changes as we can see as they begin to grow and change
DM - UW - Plant seeds and care for growing plants. • Understand the key features of the life cycle of a plant and an animal. • Begin to understand the need to respect and care for the natural environment and all living things.
We wrote instructions for other people on how to plant seeds.
We explored the differences between fruits and vegetables.
We have learnt that vegetables are the edible parts of a plant such as the root, leaves and stem. Fruits come from the flower on the plant that they grow on and fruits contain seeds.
DM - Understanding the world - Explore the natural world around them.
Exploring Seeds
Following on from our work on the identifying and sorting different fruits and vegetables we read the book A Fruit Is A Suitcase For Seeds. We know that if it contains seeds then it is a fruit. There are some vegetables that are actually fruits!
We cut open different fruits (and those we thought were vegetables) to examine the different seeds. We compared the seeds to see how they are the same or different.
DM - Understanding the world - Explore the natural world around them.
Life Cycle of a Sunflower
After listening to the story of Katie and the Sunflowers and our exploration of sunflowers, we planted our own sunflower seeds. We will water them and watch how they grow.
DM - UW - Plant seeds and care for growing plants. • Understand the key features of the life cycle of a plant and an animal. • Begin to understand the need to respect and care for the natural environment and all living things.
The Changing Seasons
We listened to the story of The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. Using this we brainstormed our knowledge of the 4 seasons of the year and how our environment changes. We sorted pictures into the different seasons and talked about how the seasons can determine what we do and what we wear.
ELG - Understanding of the World - The Natural World
Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them,
Rainforest in a Jar
As part of our work on the Rainforests, we created our own 'Rainforest in a jar' by following the instructions. We will observe the changes inside the jar as the seeds start to grow.
ELG - Understanding of the World - The Natural World
Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them.
Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
