This module we are learning about houses and home of the past and present. We began by identifying and comparing houses that can be found in the UK. We used our research to help us design a house for Ted.
N.C. Pupils should develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods. They should use a wide vocabulary of everyday historical terms.
In our second lesson, we looked at different rooms in our houses and their purposes.
This week, we compared Tudor and modern houses. We were very surprised to learn what 'wattle and daub' was made from and found lots of similarities and differences
This week we learnt about castles and how they were homes but also fortresses built to defend the land. We thought about what makes and ideal location for building a castle fit for purpose. Most of us chose to 'build' our castles on a hill surrounded by a moat so that we could look out for any invaders on the way and pull up our drawbridges so they couldn't cross the moat.
Finally, we compared old and modern houses. We used our knowledge to sort household items into, 'old or modern'. We also noticed that some things were used in the past and now. some of us even knew why some items had or had not changed.
Our historical focus this module is Toys.
In our first lesson, we had lots of fun using different sources to look at toys of the past and present. We enjoyed watching videos of old toys, touching real life toys and using images. We came up with lots of ways to sort the toys based on their appearances and features.
In our next lesson, we looked and toys through the ages and looked closely at the changes that had been made and thought about why. We then sorted the toys on a timeline.
Next, we compared two toys and are played with now and were also played with during the Victorian times; the diablo and dolls. We studied them carefully to find similarities and differences then used the knowledge we have learnt so far to help us explain the comparisons we had made.
The highlight of our module was our trip to the Guildhall Museum. We had a fantastic time learning about toys. We loved getting to see and play with toys from the past that we had never experienced before.
This module we are learning about significant explorers.
N.C. the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods
In our first lesson, we learnt what, 'significant' meant by looking at a range of significant people in our lives and in recent history.
In our second lesson we learnt about an explorer from a very long time ago and thought about how we gather evidence to learn about people from the past. We also thought about how it had changed over time and what types of evidence are most reliable. We then explored our school site to see what evidence we will leave behind.
Next, we learnt about a more recent explorer, 'Matthew Henson'. We looked a range of sources and discussed how they were different to the sources a long, long time ago. We imagined what it might me like to be a polar explorer.
Finally we researched the polar explorer, 'Felicity Aston'. We saw pictures and videos of her and quickly identfied that she was a recent explorer. We enjoyed looking at her website and watching TV interviews she had done. We then compared her experience to those of Matthew Henson.
This module we are continuing learning about explorers. In our first lesson, we ussed different sources to learn about Christopher Columbus and created fact files about him.
This module we learnt about Victorian and modern farming. In our lessons, we have been comparing how Victorian or modern farming is better and effective for farmers. We also explored how machinery has changed over time and discussed the impact of machines on farming.
This module we learnt all about seasides old and new. We looked at how and why seasides became popular and what types of activties people did and still do whilst there. We discussed what a trip to Victorian seaside would be like in comparison to a trip now and why.
