Hi! My name is Jill Kalyankar but most folks just call me Mrs. K. It's a whole lot faster to yell "Mrs. K" when you need help during a lab than to trip all over "Kalyankar".
I've been teaching for over 20 years (!) and I still love every minute of it! Over my career, I have taught a variety of subjects and topics under the Family and Consumer Science umbrella. In my early career, I taught Child Development at a Vocational School in Central PA. Then I moved to NJ to get married and found a job teaching Basic Foods, Gourmet Cooking, and Culinary Arts. Once my family was established I looked for something a little closer to home. Since I lived in Hillsborough it seemed natural to take the position here at HHS when it became available. This has been my dream job become reality! I teach Baking and Advanced Baking with the occasional Advanced Culinary class thrown in if my schedule allows. The students here at HHS are the nicest I have ever worked with! Throw in the quick commute of 4 minutes and I am quite content to stay here for a very long time :)
I love baking! The smells, the flavors, the textures, and the challenges. I love creating a perfectly flaky and buttery croissant. I love creating new and fascinating desserts and fusions of old ideas. I love the happiness that my baked goods bring to others. I can't wait to share my love of baked goods, along with all of my knowledge of how to make them, with YOU.
I'll show you pics of the fam during class but have not included them on the website for privacy reasons. This website is public so that you can still have access to all of the info/videos/recipes/etc after you leave the course. My kids don't need to have an online presence quite yet.
I grew up on a dairy farm working alongside my parents and siblings so I've done basically any farm task you can think of. I can milk cows, throw hay bales, wrangle calves, butcher pigs, etc.
I come from a very tiny community where the school graduates an average of 25 students each year (Last year there were only 17 and I was related to more than half of them! How does that compare to your class??
When I'm stressed I bake bread!
I'm a Pittsburgh Steelers fan from way back.
I have four dogs.
The most interesting pet I ever had was a baby groundhog named Junior. But that's a close tie with the baby snapping turtle we had named Mud Bud.
I love to read and my favorite genre is fantasy.
I played field hockey in highschool (but might break a hip if I tried it now, lol).
