What do nails, wood, screws, cement, cinder blocks, doors/windows and shingles have in common with flour, sugar, salt, fat, liquids, eggs and leavening agents? All serve a specific role or function in the project you are using them for and without them, problems might occur. Imagine building a foundation for a house with cinder blocks and you leave out the cement…what would happen?
Lesson Objectives:
You will know the seven basic ingredients in all baked goods.
You will understand how each ingredient works and how to make substitutions.
Lesson Goals:
You will create a Popplet or Foldable notes system that lists the purposes of each basic baking ingredient.
You will identify 3 possible substitutions for each ingredient on your Popplet or Foldable notes system.
You will suggest substitutions for a recipe when ingredients are missing.
The ingredients that all baking recipes have in common are...
1st! Pick a note-taking system. If you are crafty and you want to create a foldable tie book that's great. If you prefer digital note-taking and you want to give Popplet a try that's awesome. If you are a traditionalist and you want to just type it up in a chart I can respect that choice as well.
The link above will take you to the Popplet website. It's a neat tool for organizing information into maps.
2nd!! In your chosen note taking system, record the following information about each of the ingredients listed above.
Name of ingredient (ex. flour)
Examples of the ingredient - these are listed above for you
Purpose of ingredient - why can't you leave it out of the recipe?
3 possible substitutions for the ingredient - The examples listed above cannot be used as one of your substitutions! You must do some research and find some other examples.
**Note** - Leavening agents do NOT have acceptable substitutions. This is the only category that you will not find substitutions for.
Answer the questions in this Google form by using your notes. If you need more information use Google to search for it. Make sure you update your notes with the information you find.
Submit when you are finished.
