Students will be able to chronologically sequence the events of U.S. imperialism, including the opening of trade with Japan (Perry Expedition), the purchase of Alaska, the annexation of Hawaii, and the opening of trade with China.
Students will examine and interpret Hawaiian artifacts and documents to understand the cultural and political impacts of annexation, while also, analyzing primary and secondary sources to critically respond to questions regarding America's imperialistic actions and their motives.
Using maps and GIS, students will explain the strategic interests of the United States in the Pacific and how these interests drove territorial acquisition.
