Welcome to 7th grade math! This year is all about moving from arithmetic into deeper, more flexible and powerful ways of thinking with numbers and relationships. You’ll build on what you already know (fractions, decimals, whole numbers, basic expressions) and explore new territory: working confidently with rational numbers, understanding proportional relationships, writing and solving simple equations, exploring geometry, and beginning to make sense of data and probability.
The goal for the year is: reasoning, making sense, and using mathematics to solve real-world problems, not just doing computations.
We’ll focus on:
Understanding why the math works, not just how.
Using variables, expressions, and equations to represent situations.
Looking at relationships between quantities (for example, how one thing changes when another does).
Moving between different representations: words ↔ pictures/diagrams ↔ tables/graphs ↔ equations.
Applying your skills in meaningful contexts (finance, measurement, geometry, data).
You’ll also continue to strengthen your procedural fluency (accurately and efficiently doing computations), but with an ever-increasing emphasis on understanding and reasoning.
