- Identify and explain the importance of coral reefs both culturally, economically and ecologically.
- Identify and explain coral biology (growth, reproduction, feeding, defense, anatomy, etc.).
- Identify and explain threats to coral reefs and potential solutions to prevent coral reef damage.
- Design a new species of fish using known fish adaptations for coral reefs.
- Identify and explain coral bleaching.
- Predict the survival of the Great Barrier Reef using evidence from coral stresses and resilience.

Assignment #1: Science Journal #11
Answer the following questions:
- Why are coral reefs important?
- How are corals monitored?
- What is coral resilience?
- Why is resilience important for corals?
Requirements:
- 3 to 8 sentences for each question
- Work cited with in text citations
Assignment #2: Coral Project
Step 1: Read section 7. 3 of the text provided below.
Step 2: Answer the three questions at the end of the section (in document under section review)
Step 3: Create a question based on the provided reading.
Step 4: Answer the above questions that you created. (provide location in book where this questions is answered.)
Step 5: Research a coral species (Use questions below to guide your research)
- Choose a species from the provided list: Staghorn Coral, Elkhorn Coral, Lettuce Coral, Grooved Brain Coral, Boulder Star Coral, Common Brain Coral, Great Star Coral, Ivory Bush Coral, Mustard Hill Coral, Clubbed Finger Coral, Massive Starlet Coral, Fire Coral
Use the following questions to guide you:
1. How does a coral consume food?
2. How does a coral reproduce?
3. How does a coral defend against predators?
4. What are the internal structures of a coral polyp?
5. What makes this coral different from others?
Step 6: Using the above information create a model of a coral polyp
The model can be a 3D model, a poster, or a presentation (Use the rubric provided, you may need to scroll to a different page for the particular rubric)
Step 7: You will present your findings to the class in an informal setting.

Answer the following questions:
- How are corals threatened? (3 threats)
Requirements:
- Three threats to coral reefs
- Explanation of how threat affects coral reefs
- Work cited with in text citations
- Approximately one paragraph per threat (5 to 8 sentences per paragraph)
Assignment #4: Coral Reef Fishes Project
Step 1: Research two types of fish found on a coral reef.
Answer the following questions about these fishes:
- What is the scientific name?
- Where do these fishes live in the coral reef?
- What do these fishes eat?
- What is their role in the reef ecology?
- Where do these fishes live?
- What adaptation allow this fish to survive in a coral reef environment? (List at least one for each fish)
Step 2: Design a new reef fish using the questions below about your fish's biology: (use the basic fish layout to guide you)
- Does it need to blend in with the reef environment?
- Does it have warning colors to let other fish know it is dangerous or territorial?
- Would it mimic another kind of fish or other object (such as, sea grass, coral, rock, etc.)?
- Does its body need to be able to squeeze into crevices or tunnels?
- Are there adapted fins to your fish?
- Where does your fish live? What environmental conditions are challenging for your fish?
Step 3: Draw your fish (at least two rough drafts) using the drawing requirements:
- Adaptations to reef environment
- Head on right side of paper
- Labeled fins
Step 4: Create a final drawing of your fish using the requirements for a scientific illustrator below:

Assignment #5: Coral Bleaching News Article
Step 1: Answer the following questions:
- What is coral bleaching?
- What causes coral bleaching?
- How is coral bleaching monitored?
- How do corals recover from coral bleaching?
Step 2: In a news article (written by you), determine if the Grate Barrier Reef will recover? Provide evidence to support your ideas.
Note: Some articles have been posted to inform you of the current condition of the reef. Additionally, go to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation website above in Assignment #3 to also provide you with more information.
