Midterm Assignment!

Day before Exams (January 14th, 2020)

Day 1: Flower Dissection: EVERYONE!

You will dissect a flower using the provided protocol:

Part I: Individually

Obtain one flower from Ms. Burnett. Sit in your respective groups for collaboration. (Individual work will be submitted for grading.)
Take a picture of the external view of the flower.
Take bulleted observational notes on the external structures of the flower.
When done with external features of the flower, obtain a pair of dissection scissors.
You will cut the flower in half lengthwise. (See image below)
Take a picture of the internal structures of the flower.
Take bulleted observational notes on the internal structures of the flower.

Part II: Small groups

Share your flower pictures to your group's folder on Google Classroom.
1. Name file as Flower Name_Internal/External_Your Name.jpg
Within the folder you will find four different flower types of both internal and external structures.
Using one of the flower types, a scraping of eggs will be collected from a flower sample.
Using the same flower, and scraping of pollen or a cross section of the anther will be taken and put onto a microscope slide.
On a piece of white paper, you will record the microscope information from a flower. Below will be recorded for both the pollen/anther cross section AND egg.

College Prep Students

Part I: Labels

You will make a copy of the flower images folder.

In a google drawing, you will add the internal and external photos of one flower. You will then, label the images using important vocabulary (see list from preparation information).

With each label you will provide a brief description of the function of these structures. (Some parts may be combined to describe overall functions of the flower).

Repeat above instructions for all flowers within folder.

Part II: Questions

Answer the prompts below using observations from your dissection.

Describe the male parts of the flower. Do these parts all look the same? Why or why not?
Describe the female parts of the flower. Do these parts all look the same? Why or why not?
What is pollination?
Which plant parts are involved in pollination?
How do petals help attract pollinators?
Imagine if you were a butterfly, bee or hummingbird, which flower would you choose? Explain why?
Why are there so many varieties of flowers?

Part III: Essay

Choose one of the options below:

Option 1: In a creative essay describe the life cycle of a plant. Be sure to include important vocabulary.

Option 2: In an essay, connect this plant dissection to three topics we have studies thus far. Within your essay include explanations of the connection using experiences from the course as evidence.

**Expectations for Essay:

Thesis statement (Purpose) with supporting details.
Key vocabulary terms (Terms from plant life cycle, vocabulary from topics)

Honors Students:

Part I: Labels

In an essay (five paragraphs), connect this plant dissection to three topics (Chapters) we have studies thus far. Within your essay include explanations of the connection using experiences from the course as evidence.

**Expectations for Essay:

Thesis statement (Purpose) with supporting details.
Key vocabulary terms (vocabulary from topics discussed in a chapter)
Implications for the information stated.
A paragraphs are 5 to 8 sentences. (Ms. Burnett counts the number of sentences.)

Ms. Burnett will dissect your flower and send you pictures. You miss out on a very cool and exciting day!
