Assignment #1: Science Journal #19

Answer the following questions about cells:

1. What is a cell?

2. Why are cells important?

3. Describe the cell theory using the provided resource.

Assignment #3: Cell Project #2

Goal: You will create a 3D model or a video showing cell organelles and their functions.

Step 1: Choose a plant, animal or bacteria cell

Step 2: In the provided table, write the different organelles and their functions for the cell of your choice.

Step 3: Model or video

Option 1:

- Create a 3D model of a cell (what you choose above).

This model needs to have all the organelles and their functions (labels) (No food)

Option 2:

- Using house hold items, choose something that has the same function as each of the organelles

- Create a video/ presentation to be shown in class

Step 4: Reflection

- Write a three paragraph reflection using the questions below.

1. Compare and contrast your cell to a prokaryotic cell

2. Describe the connections between all the organelles within the cell

3. Reflect on your overall project (was the model/ video successful? what was challenging? What was easy? What would you change? Answer the whys too...)

Step 5: Presentation to class

• You will be presenting your model or video using a gallery walk type of presentation. (Ms. Burnett will explain when the time comes.)

TURN INS:

• Document with reflection

This assignment will be a 100 pt project grade.

Assignment #4: Science Journal #20

Respond to the following prompt:

• What are these images depicting? Explain your interpretation of this pieces of art.

Assignment #5: Microscope Lab

Pre lab Assignment: Complete the microscope worksheet (printed out) and turn in.

Microscope Lab: Using the microscope lab data sheet, record 6 (six) specimen data.

• Drawing
• Total Magnification
• Observations of specimen
• Identification (if possible)

Post Lab Write up:

Answer the following questions:

• Explain why a microscope is needed to see cells. Use your observational data to support your answer.
• How can such a small organism be the basis for the oceanic food web? Use your knowledge of plankton and your observational data to support your answer.

Assignment #6: Plankton Research Paper

Goal: You will write a 2 to 3 page paper about a plankton species.

Step 1: Choose a plankton species from the provided list. (Cyanobacteria, Diatoms, Dinoflagellate, Coccolithophore, Foraminifera, Radiolaria, Copepods, Amphipods, Euphausiids (krill), Siphonophores)

Step 2: Initial Research

• In a process journal, you will answer questions about your species of plankton.

Step 3: Intial Question and Thesis statement

• Using the research from the previous step, you will write an overarching question and thesis statement for your paper.

Step 4: Outline

• You will write an formal outline for your paper using directions and examples from Ms. Burnett.
• The CEIJ graphic organizer can help you initiate the outline.

Step 5: Write your paper

Step 6: Editing and citations.

Step 7: Turn in your final two to three page paper in MLA format.
