Challenge: As a class, you all will be designing a "new" New Bedford, MA.
Story: In the year 2050, Nazi Zombies pulverized the city of New Bedford, MA. The buildings and other infrastructures were destroyed in the zombie apocalypse. This secondary succession event caused a wide expansion of the city and a new species of zombie was created. These warm bodied zombies, Homo zombias, is looking to redesign the city of New Bedford, Zombieland. The city will need to be complete self sustaining and environmentally friendly.
Task: You will design a portion of the 24 square miles of New Bedford, Zombieland with the following considerations:
- Sustenance (Food, water, etc.)
- Shelter (Housing to live in)
- Commerce (Where does the money come from? How do people make money?
- Greenery (Natural places, like parks, community gardens, etc.)
- Energy (Where does the energy come from? What is the energy source?)
- Transportation (How does the people in the city move from one location to another?)
Procedures:
Step 1: As a group determine the basic concepts of your city (Review and determine the considerations found in the task portion of this assignment).
Step 2: Where are the natural characteristics (rivers, ponds, forests, etc.)?
Step 3: Determine the sizes of each of the parcels?
Step 4: Individually, design your city layout (Leave a 1cm border, so you're able to connect to the other portions of the city)
Step 5: You will present your parcel to the class (using the document camera).
- Discuss the following:
- How does your parcel meet the ideas discussed in Step 1?
- How does your parcel meet a sustainable environment for humans and nature?
Step 6: Determine how each of the portions of the city connect.
