Biology Summer Work 2019
Welcome to Biology! Biology aims to increase understanding of living systems and to allow the student to consider the systems in relationship to themselves and other organisms in the natural environment
Part I: Supplies
For Biology next year, you will need the following supplies:
- One Composition notebook
Suggested supplies:
- Sturdy folder for the year (two pockets)
- One subject notebook (spiral bound, does not include composition notebook)
- Colored Pencils
- Writing pencils and pens
- Highlighters
Part II: Naturalist Journal
In your composition notebook, you will complete four (4) observational journal entries. Each journal entry should have the following:
Journal Requirement:
- Date, Time
- Location
- Weather conditions
- Observations on what you see around you
- 5 to 10 observations
- Conclusions and Inferences for each observation above (suggestions below)
- Feelings about observations
- Questions about what you see
- What connections to your learning are you making?
- Other data (number of trees, number of animals, etc)
- One sketch (we are not all artists, but sketching what we see is important)
**Your observational journals should be spread out throughout at least two weeks.
Example:
June 20, 2019 at 4 pm
New Bedford, MA (my backyard at 1123 David’s Way)
Sunny with some clouds - puffy dark clouds, 81℉, Air feels thick and heavy
I see a dog, grass, maple tree, and a blue jay feeding a bird feeder. The wind is blowing slightly. The dog is laying in the grass. The maple tree has three pointed leaves that are bright green.
Blue jay will knock bird seed out of the feeder and then go on the ground and pick up and eat the seeds. Is this behavior an adaptation? We learned about adaptations in the 7th grade. We talked about Darwin’s finches. Why do the leaves change in the fall? Is this an adaptation for the tree?
Part III: Ecological Impacts of the United States
In your composition notebook, you will complete ONE (1) project, which includes a journal entry (Section A) and a mini-project (Section B). See below for more information.
Section A:
- Topic related to a study in ecology (Suggested topics below)
- Food web dynamics
- endangered species
- invasive species
- mass extinctions
- effects of climate change
- population changes during the time of world exploration [new 9th grade] or western expansion [new 10th grade])
- Write a focus question: How has the ecology of the United States changed over time?
- The above question is the focus for your research topics.
- The topic you choose is also the ecological focus for your research.
- Research the answer to the question above using 5 additional questions:
- All answers to your questions should be in your journal.
- Example:If you choose the invasive species topic, you would potentially ask the below questions:
- What is an invasive species?
- What is an example of an invasive species brought over from the Columbian Exchange?
- How do invasive species influence the native populations?
- Why are invasive species successful members of a non-native ecosystem?
- In what ways did the transcontinental railway affect the ecological balance of the Western United States?
Section B:
- In a project, you will present your finds about the focus question:
- How has the ecology of the United States changed over time?
- Choose a presentation method from the list below:
- Poster
- tri-fold
- digital poster at least 20 x 30 inches or 30 x 20 inches
- poster board
- Presentation (6 slides, 5 - 10 minutes)

- Screencastify
- Prezi
- Diorama (physical representation with explanation)
- Podcast (5 to 10 minutes)
- Journal Entries (3 journals, 3 pages single space max per journal)

- Interpretive dance (5 minutes, explanation of the connections and costume)
- Art Gallery (3 art pieces with explanations)
- Painting
- Sketches
- Sculpture
- Poem (5 minutes slam performance)
- Educational Website (scientific and historical connections with appropriate images and descriptions, link to additional information, etc.)
- Introduction (welcome, homepage)
- Minimum of at least 2 additional pages
- Story (3 pages single spaced)
- Play
- Short Story
- Picture book (10 pages, includes picture pages and words)
- Metaverse app. Presentation ( Metaverse app directions and download)
