Intensive Tango Beginners’ Course
London Jesuit Centre,
114 Mount St, London W1K 3AH
Saturdays 29 Feb, 7 Mar 2020
"I had never danced before, and Warren's focus on musicality and basic steps really made the course enjoyable and useful!” Thomas B.
“I was completely new to Tango and I thought that Warren managed to give us some very good tools to get started and to focus on the music, rather than on set routines. The intensive course was fun and Warren was very supportive and helpful.” Joana T.
Pope Francis used to dance social Argentine Tango as a young man. Maybe you have tried it and are rusty. And maybe you have seen Argentine Tango on television and would like to try it.
But social Argentine Tango is nothing like that seen on TV or the streets of Buenos Aires. Tango is for connection with an audience 1mm away. TV Tango and street tango shows are for judges and an audience 10 to 30 metres away and via television in homes.
Learning never stops in Tango. But three intensive three-hour Argentine Tango classes have been arranged at the Mount Street Jesuit Centre in February 2020 to enable absolute novices to function at the milongas (social dances) held monthly at the Arrupe Hall – especially the annual Tango Shelter milongas held every 2nd Saturday in December in honour of Pope Francis’ birthday and to raise funds for Farm Street Church’s work for the homeless.

Class Leader: Warren Edwardes [Plus guest teachers to give a different perspective]
Warren Edwardes, is an average but much sought after tango dancer. It took him a year to function at milongas. But having learnt the hard way he understands difficulties that naturally gifted dancers cannot. He can help you get going in a month.
As an international DJ he will bring musicality to the fore.
As a teacher he has delivered lectures and presentations in wine and finance across the world.
As a tango teacher his experience includes a class for the boys of Eton College and the girls of St Mary’s Ascot.
Enquiries: tango@edwardes.org
Syllabus: The class will unusually start with musicality before steps and sequences. Musicality is usually an optional extra.
The course will then cover the essential parts of the excellent YouTube series of short tango classes by Diego Blanco & Ana Padron
The playlist also includes a series of videos from actual milongas to illustrate Argentine Tango practice in a social dance environment.
Home study and repeated revision especially balancing on one foot exercises at every moment are essential to get the best out of the intensive course. And the YouTube videos can be studied repeatedly in the years ahead.
Social tango at Tango Shelter 2019 can be seen in these YouTube videos and they give a good idea of the style of Argentine Tango to be learnt.
It is very different from Ballroom Tango
Milongas: Social Argentine Tango continues after the course monthly at Mount Street Jesuit Centre’s Arrupe Hall on Sat 14 Mar and 11 Apr. Free entry on these dates for Embracing Tango students - promo code "Embrace"
Entry to the milongas beyond on 2nd Saturdays with some exceptions (e.g. 15 Feb and 3 Oct) is at the reduced rate of £10 [code “Mayfair”] compared with the normal online rate of £12. £13 inside the door.
