We would like to acknowledge the original custodians of this land the Awabakal people. For they hold the memories, tradition and hopes for Indigenous Australia. This land is, was and always will be Indigenous soil.

Social Action project Group spotlight
The Sewing Social Action Project Group (SAPG), strives to make textile pieces out of recycled materials to benefit the community. Their aim is to help others in saving money and preventing more clothes going to landfill. Projects the group has worked on in the past include: making masks during the pandemic, reusable shopping bags, infusion bag to put IV bags in for hospitals, Christmas decorations to gift, sensory books to give to a preschool, crocheting poppies for remembrance day, knitting scarves for the homeless, dog toys for dog shelters, amongst many other projects. Lately, the group has been fixing clothing from the community to help others get more wear out of their clothes.
Alison- who leads the group, says the reasons behind starting the Sewing SAPG are because for years she had been collecting fabric that deserved a new purpose, and when she first arrived at Cooks Hill Campus, she saw the possibilities when seeing the now converted sewing room. Alison explains that she grew up watching her family sew and even studied textiles and sculpture in London. During her education career she even designed her wedding dress in collaboration with her students. She comments that out of all her projects, she is most proud of her wedding dress.
Through research, the Social Action Group has discovered only 16% of clothes are actually sold at op shops. So being sustainable and donating to communities such as shelters and homes is better for the environment. They have also discovered that Australia has the highest rate of consumption in the world, and this has made Alison super passionate about being sustainable.
The environment in the SAPGs work space is described by students as a calm place with diverse interests. Each student participating has goals and interests for this SAPG. A student Ripley has worked on embroidery and Alison was very pleased with the students' work and continuous effort. Another student, Jackson describes their motive to join was to learn how to sew because it is a good skill to develop and can save so much time, money and clothing. This shows that the students have an understanding of their group's purpose. Another student Eddie explains he joined because he wanted to learn how to alter clothing for himself and friends- implying personal growth in reasoning to join the group.
Sewing SAPG are always looking for new ideas and donations so let them know!

Sport highlights
Sport this term has had some wonderful feedback from our junior students. Through interviewing, students stated that sport has helped them to not only gain confidence but to build new connections and friendships. Rollerskating had some particularly amazing responses with students saying things like: ‘When I first started rollerskating I couldn’t even stand up and now I can skate around’. Students reported Yoga to be 'relaxing and calming'. The new addition of Lawn Bowls has been greatly appreciated. Students have had the opportunity to learn from seasoned experts, and have experienced the meditativeness of the activity.
Sport is a great way to get active and have fun with friends. Benefits of physical activity include: increased brain function, better sleep and reduced stress.
