Acknowledgement of Country
Acknowledgement of Country
We acknowledge the Awabakal people as the traditional custodians of this land, and pay our respects to elders past and present. We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on our campus and our readers.
We also recognise the strong connections of the Worimi people across the places our community lives, works and learns.
We live in a beautiful part of the world, and are fortunate to learn, work and play here.

Learning Through Internship walks
This week Learning Through Internship walks began and kicked off with visits to Blooms and Eat Your Water. Through these visits, students learnt how both businesses began, what the hardest parts of running the bussiness and most rewarding parts. A big thank you to Indi from Eat Your Water and Cosette from Blooms for their time!
More information on each can be found below:
Fun facts:
The business has been operating for over 10 years.
The biggest bouquet/order (seperate to catering for events) was a $600 bouquet.
While you can train to become a florist through TAFE, the recommended method of training is through experience.
They source their flowers mostly from the Hunter Valley and Sydney flower markets.
Cosette's (owner) advice to students looking to start their own business is 'you don't know until you try & to back yourself. There are a lot of what ifs but if you love something, it will work out.'
Fun facts:
Liam (founder) started the brand in his bedroom at 18 years old. He was originally going to use the name for a band name!
The brand started in 2015.
Their best selling product is a black cap with their logo embroidered in white.
They have a strong focus on sustainability and ethical practices.
They have collaborated with various artists on designs.
They mostly cater for surf wear and most garnments are unisex.
Upcoming opportunities
Maitland ARTEXPRESS
In week 10, as an excursion there will be an opportunity to go with the school to Maitland Art Gallery to look at ARTEXPRESS, which is a showcase of art from high school art students across NSW whose works are chosen to be showcased in the gallery.
Luna Park
This is a heads up, that a call out will go out soon for expresions of interest (EOI) for an excursion to Luna Park!
TAFE YES Courses for Term 2
These are short courses about half a term in length which are good for figuring out if TAFE is a pathway students want to explore. To register for a course there are a few prerequisites such as being in Years 10 -12.
If this interests you, make sure to read the LTI announcement page. There are lots of different programs ranging from Hospitality to Animal Care and more. I seriously suggest checking what ones interest you because they are fun.
EOIs will close Monday the 9th of March at 1pm! Or if a program is already full!

Podcasts as resources
This week Advisory 3 has been investigating how podcasts can be a great resource for their projects. For their journal task, they had to listen to a podcast that was relevant to their topic of interest. Students listened to a huge variety of great podcasts, from Dom’s ‘Game Developer Podcast’ to Selasi’s ‘Unladylike’.
Podcasts tend to be disregarded as being a useful resource, but they are actually an awesome way to get information for your research. Advisory 3’s advisor, Lucie, told us that podcasts are so great for a multitude of reasons, namely because they tend to…
Be very well-researched
Give access to really good new information
Frequently include interviews with experts
Podcasts come in all sorts of different styles and genres, from those that tell epic novel-like stories, to those teaching incredible facts explained by experts in easily understandable ways, to the ones that you listen to for the entertaining hosts and comedic banter. They can be as short as five minutes or go on for hours, and they are a unique form of storytelling because of the ease and anonymity that the audio-only format offers. Plus - you can listen to them anywhere, anytime! While eating breakfast, walking to school, or sitting on the bus - your homework just got a whole lot easier!
If you don’t have a Spotify subscription, don’t worry! Podcasts can be found and listened to through services such as Podcatcher, Radio National, Apple Podcasts, ABC Listen, or even just the podcast’s own website.
So, next time you’re in need of some fresh information, why not consider ditching the research papers and putting on a podcast instead?
Here are a few recommendations from Lucie to get you started:
‘The Infinite Monkey Cage’: Science and comedy mixed together.
‘Smologies’: A kid-friendly version of Ologies, interviewing experts on topics like cats, dinosaurs, and the ocean.
‘Stuff You Should Know’: Explores the how and why behind nearly any topic.
‘Radiolab’: Deep, investigative science and philosophy storytelling.
‘Science Friday’: Covers current science news and technology.
‘The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel’: A high-quality mystery adventure for, and about, middle schoolers.
‘Desert Island Discs’ or ‘Conversations with Richard Fidler & Sarah Kanowski’: Very relevant to the Who Am I? project. People talk about their lives for an hour - have your adults screen these for you.
‘The Rest is Entertainment’: Pop Culture
+ Tash suggested: ‘Women Are Not Small Men’ with Stacy Sims, a podcast about science-based strategies to help women perform with their physiology.
