Slide design 101
A key part to maintaining an engaging exhibition and an interested panel is without a doubt, slide design. An understanding of graphic design and formulation is not only an extremely useful skill to hone for potential career paths such as advertising, but also helps to keep an exhibition memorable, and gives more talking points for positive feedback from your panel members and advisors.
For my exhibitions, I always utilise Canva’s resources and vectors, as they are jam packed with the tools necessary to create beautiful and punctual designs. It would also be useful to investigate different applications like Google Slides or Microsoft Powerpoint and compare which is easiest for you to use and most importantly, which can assist you to generate unique slide composition!
Here are a few examples of slide design from my previous/current Personal Interest Projects which I've developed using Canva.

What is your SBT?
I do a school-based traineeship (SBT) in nursing with Hunter New England Local Health District, I am completing a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and 700 hours of work placement at the John Hunter Hospital.
What was the process behind you being nominated?
I was nominated by my SBT coordinator for my workplace performance and academic results throughout the course.
How did it feel to win the Hunter & Central Coast Region Trainee of the Year 2024?
I felt overwhelmed with excitement. I am very honoured to now represent VET Training Australia.
How will this award impact your life going forward?
There are so many ways! I am now an ambassador for VET Training Australia, and have progressed to the NSW State Training Awards, so who knows what will come in the near future.
What advice would you give to any students interested in getting an SBT?
I would tell any student considering an SBT to grab the opportunity with both hands and make the absolute most of it.

We caught up with Margot this week to chat about the project tree!
What is the purpose of the tree?
To have a visual representation of all of the projects in the school. I think it encourages connection without having to talk to people. So that people with similar interests can connect with each other, learn from each other, or attend each other's exhibitions.
When did you come up with the idea for the tree?
Probably in 2017, when I was working with Sheri. Originally it was going to be a vine going up the staircase. But we realised that not everyone goes upstairs, and that it's not safe for people to stop and stand on the stairs to look at it. We decided to put it near the office so visitors could get a snapshot of the diversity of students' passions and interests in a simple format when they come through the door.
Who helped to make it?
The art in action SAP-G
How long did it take to design and build the tree?
6 months of brainstorming, budgeting and designing, and then, once we had the resources, 6 months of creating it.
What is your hope for the tree?
I would love for students to take ownership of it, to look at it, and use it as a way of connecting with each other. And update it every term!

Ian Woodley, from UoN’s Future Students team, and two Student Ambassadors came to speak to Year 11 and Year 12 students about the Big Picture pathway to study at the University of Newcastle. In addition, they outlined several other pathways, such as Open Foundation and degree transfers. They discussed what life is like as a UoN student and what support is available to students. You can read more about UoN pathways here.
On June 3rd, Family Planning visited CHC to educate students about safe sex and contraception. There were three sessions: for Year 9, Year 10 and Seniors.
Family Planning is an organisation that deals with reproductive and sexual health services. They’re located on 384 Hunter St, Newcastle City. If you’re in need of advice, free contraception or STI testing, you can walk in and ask and they will provide.
At the sessions, the main topics of focus were safe sex, contraception, and some elements of consent. Dale, the representative from Family Planning, was happy to answer any questions the students had and she was a very lovely teacher - informing us about how you should go about using contraception, the different types, and how the current rate of chlamydia for young people is 1 in 3. Dale emphasised the importance of regular STI checks. It’s safe to say that everyone learnt a lot and is now better informed on the topic.

Welcoming the newest member of the staff here at CHC, Antonia! Antonia is a member of the Wellbeing & Learning Support Team, working across most advisories but especially Advisory 2 and 7. Antonia was inspired to become a teacher by her passion for helping others, as well as the opportunity that being a teacher provides her to share knowledge with other people and support students with their learning. Antonia also strives to be a figure that students can come to for support, guidance, and encouragement, as she feels she did not have this positive experience when she was a student. Antonia is ensuring she creates a better learning environment for the students she works with than what she received in her schooling! Read an excerpt of our interview below:
What drew you to Cooks Hill Campus?
I really love the community at Cooks Hill Campus! The students and the staff have all been very welcoming and I am excited to now be part of such a vibrant, diverse community. I like the way students here are able to focus their learning on their own passions and interests. Since being here I have been so amazed by some of the work I have seen, watching the students drive their own learning has inspired me to take on more challenges myself.
What have you noticed about this school that is different to others?
There are lots of differences! However, a big difference that I have noticed is the fashion amongst the students. I love that everyone here expresses themselves through hair colours/styles, jewellery/accessories and piercings, make-up and clothes/shoes. It is cool to see everyone's twist on the school uniform (within limits of course!).
What is your favourite part of CHC so far?
Definitely the students! I feel that it can be scary getting used to a new person being around, however, I have felt that the students have been very accepting/welcoming of me. I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone and I am excited to continue to develop connections with everyone.
Are you planning on teaching Japanese, and could you tell us more about your plans for this?
I am planning on teaching Japanese! I am trained as a Japanese teacher so it would be awesome to share my knowledge of and passion of all things Japanese with the students. We actually had our first class on Thursday week 5 during session 2 which was very successful. The first class was a great opportunity for me to gauge the students' interest in Japanese and their language ability levels. From next term, if possible, I would love to run Japanese classes as a SAP-G so that students could have an ongoing opportunity to learn another language at this school.

Do you know why you were nominated for TGIF person of the week?
Because I got good feedback from my supervisor at my new LTI.
Where is your LTI?
Riding for the disabled, which provides therapeutic horse riding lessons for adults and children with disabilities.
What was the process of setting up the internship?
Andy suggested it to me because I do a bit of horse riding outside of school at my grandparents' farm. Andy helped me write an email, and we set up a phone meeting with them. Carol (now supervisor) was really nice, and agreed to take me on once a week.
What are your jobs at your LTI?
Caring for the horses and preparing them for riding lessons. I’m a side walker which means walking beside the horse, making sure that the person is stable, and enjoying it.
What is your advice for CHC students wanting to get an LTI in an area that interests them?
Hurry up and do it! Don’t waste time, because you will just be losing time that you could be spending doing something you enjoy. Talk to Andy and other students to find out what is available.
How do you feel about being TGIF person of the week?
I feel proud and thankful that my work is being acknowledged.
** Have you done something cool this week? **
Do you know someone who did something cool?

Frank Sinatra was always extremely passionate about racial issues in America, being a vehement anti-racist, particularly sympathetic to the plight of African, Italian and Irish-Americans. In 1947, Sinatra commented on racism in America, saying: "As long as most white men think of a (black man) as a (black man) first and a man second, we're in trouble.”
Sinatra’s social activism apexed in Nevada, where he and the Rat Pack would refuse to play at establishments that forced their co-star, Sammy Davis Jr, to sleep in “colored-only” [sic.] hotels. In 1955, Sinatra began to issue threats to a hotel diner that he would frequent, saying that, if they didn’t allow black people in the diner, he would personally see to it that every single waiter and busboy be fired. Sinatra would go on to refuse to play at any segregated venues altogether, resulting in many casinos and hotels becoming integrated, and going out of their way to hire black employees to appease Sinatra. This resulted in Nevada becoming almost completely de-segregated in the year 1960, years earlier than the other USA states, which would only become integrated in the wake of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

tоска (tos-ka)
(Russian)
Тоска is famously one of Russian’s most untranslatable words, as it encapsulates so many emotions in one simple phrase, and holds many shades of negative emotion and meaning that sometimes can’t be fully expressed in English well. Тоска is usually translated as misery or yearning, but it can mean a whole range of emotions including anxiety, grief, boredom, angst, despair and depression.
At its deepest and most painful, tоска can mean an experience of great anguish, often without a specific cause. At lesser levels, it could be a dull ache of the mind and soul, a longing without bounds, a vague restlessness and mental throes. In specific cases, Тоска could be a longing for something specific, lovesickness or a silently painful nostalgia. At its lowest levels, Тоска can be ennui, boredom, or a strange emptiness which is hard to fill.
