Acknowledgement of Country
I would like to acknowledge and show our respect to the traditional custodians of the land that we create on, the Awabakal and Worimi people. Let us pay our respects to the elders past, present, and emerging, as they hold the culture, tradition and hopes of Indigenous Australia.
We must always remember that under the asphalt and concrete this land is, was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Hello and welcome to this week's issue of TGIF!
We are happy to say we've had a few new additions to the team this term, and they've brought great new ideas and excitement with them: such as crosswords! In this issue, we put a spotlight on an Advisor, outlearning opportunities and a new Wellbeing Group. Thank you to Jamie and Sammi for our banner image this week, which features Dorothy Hill, a palaeontologist/geologist who was the first female professor at an Australian university.
As always, we would love to feature student work, so if you are up for sharing please reach out.
Photos from the week below:
Last week, on the 6th-7th of August, three students from Cooks Hill Campus (including myself) partook in the 2025 Youth Mock Council through Newcastle City Council at Newcastle Town Hall. Cooks Hill Campus attended alongside Hunter Sports High, the three Callaghan Campus', and Lambton High.
Over the course of these two days, we learnt about the inner workings of local government; drafted notices of motion in separate groups on a given topic, then proposed, discussed, and voted on said motions. We spoke with city councillors and the lord mayor, Ross Kerridge; and enjoyed a complimentary BBQ and buffet.
On the second day, there was a designated period where students were able to ask the councillors and the Lord Mayor questions. The questions were not confrontational in nature, instead being asked out of good faith curiosity. The questions asked were about a range of topics, from city resources, to party affiliations, the upcoming Rising Tides protest, and council practices.
At the end of the two days, students who participated received a Certificate of Completion from the Mayor. Overall, the experience was highly interactive and educational. It offered valuable insight into local government jurisdiction and practices, and on where city council's position lies within Australia as a whole. We worked together with a range of new people to pursue a common goal and learnt about each other's passions and interests along the way.

When I was in high school I wanted to work with horses, I just didn't know in what capacity. After graduating highschool I went and lived with my friend and brother up the coast while I was working on a native plant nursery. After graduating, my main focus was to just have fun. When I was 30 I became curious about university, so I did a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Then after having a bit of a break I did a Bachelor of Education in order to become a teacher.
Before becoming a teacher I tried a lot of different jobs such as doing data entry for a big company, I worked as a festival director and I was a media and office assistant to an Australian Senator which gave me the opportunity to travel a lot while assisting them.
My strongest skills include; organisation, clear communication and the ability to bring people together.
In the future I would like to learn to play an instrument or speak a new language, as well as having a productive vegetable garden.

Way to relax and unwind after a long day.
What kind of atmosphere is it?
Definitely relaxed! Also FUN.
What kind of games can be expected?
Pickleball, basketball, volleyball, shuttlecock.
Is it drop in?
Absolutely! You can drop in to try it out for a week and see if it's for you or not. I'd love to see more people join in the coming weeks.
