Welcome!
Acknowledgement of Country
I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands where TGIF was written, the Awabakal and Worimi Peoples (where I live, and was raised). I would also like to extend my Respects to the People of Darkinjung land (where I was born), and all Aboriginal people reading this. Along with all the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples of Australia, who lived on, learned on, and nurtured this beautiful land for over 60,000 years before colonisation - and subsequent atrocities - that brought my ancestors here.

On Friday the 14th, Alana Kilman came to visit Cooks Hill Campus, under her motto "Your career is an adventure, not an exam".
Alana Kilmartin's ambitious vision to take her Unserious careers roadshow to 250 schools across Australia has landed her at Cooks Hill Campus, Tomaree High School and Wallsend Campus in the Newcastle Central group of schools.
Alana's energy and passion for helping young people to find joy, meaning, and fun in their work life gave students important take-aways including having the courage to get curious about what else is out there.
Through telling her own career stories, the engaging presentation challenged students to take travel adventures, try jobs that come along, and ask themselves, "where do I want to find myself?"
The casual jog years concept challenged the norm, as it's usually a set career pathway that is considered as being successful. Alana spoke about school leavers seeing Careers in the first five years through a process of laying foundations, and although not necessarily being in one industry or occupation, all learning in the first five years will be valuable.
Alana's advice to her younger self: "Experiences in your casual jog years includes finding the jobs you like and surrounding yourself with people that support you. Build great relationships, know what you need and ask for help."
School feedback: "It was excellent, always hard to impress students, but they were attentive and engaged for the hour. The theme of trying various jobs is excellent and it was presented well."
-Alana's Biography, organised by Andy F.
Floccinaucinihilipilification (Floksi-nausi-nihili-pili-fication)
Floccinaucinihilipilification is more than just a fun typing exercise, the word itself is a victim of its meaning, because floccinaucinihilipilification is the action or habit of estimating something to be completely useless and utterly worthless.
It combines 4 different latin prefixes; Flocci, Nauci, Nihili and Pili, all meaning “nothing” or “very little value”, but when the word gets this difficult just say that something’s useless.
I often feel as though people look at me with absolute floccinaucinihilipilification, which I know realistically isn’t true, but the feeling is always there.

"An intense, but ultimately beautiful listen, OK Computer tells several stories from several points of view, bringing you through the high-highs and the low-lows of each. Recurring themes such as anger, love, depression, and the stripped back meaning of life are questioned and stewed on in their own unique ways throughout the album." -Poppy.

The Pet of the Week this time around is Paisley the cat!
Paisley is 8 years old, born in September 2016. His favourite food is prawns, and he enjoys drinking from the bathroom tap. His favourite things to do are annoy everyone in the house, meow loudly, lick himself, sleep in inconvenient places, and play with his toys.
Paisley also enjoys watching reality TV, resting in the sunroom, licking people's plates, jumping into washing baskets, and accidentally choking himself around the handles of shopping bags.

For an average Cooks Hill Campus student, no words inspire more fear than Quantitative Reasoning (QR). A mere mention of these words can cause strange symptoms such as: sweaty palms, pale skin, fever, and a sense of impending doom. Some cases even require a lie down in the Wellbeing Hub. Luckily, there is something you can do to prevent ever getting this deadly ailment.
Understanding is key! Quantitative Reasoning is perhaps the most misunderstood goal in Big Picture Education. Tell me, what do you think when you hear those words? I’m going to assume most people immediately think of long boring equations, fractions on whiteboards, and worst of all, MathsOnline. Even though the aforementioned assist with QR, there is so much more you can do to expand your knowledge and learning of this goal beyond mainstream mathematics. After all, that’s what Big Picture Education is all about.
The official description of Quantitative Reasoning is as follows:
The goal is to learn to use the skills, concepts and logic of mathematics to understand and interpret situations, solve problems and take action in life, learning and work.
As you can see from the description above, you don’t need to add a bunch of equations to your project if it has nothing to do with the essential question (keep in mind that MathsOnline or a similar learning program is required and can help you). For example, if you’re doing a project on Art, there are many different concepts and skills using mathematics that you can include. Some of these could be the golden ratio, geometry, analysis of symmetry etc. All of which you can ask your advisor to assign you tasks on Maths Online to support! Even though such a project is artistic, there’s still plenty of room to include and understand these concepts. I guarantee that no matter how little you perceive your project has to do with Quantitative Reasoning, there are still so many formulas and skills you can apply to your project to really understand this goal. If you have any questions relating to specific projects and ways you can include it, ask your advisor or Sam if he’s available!

Achimnes - “Such with is rare”
The Achimenes longiflora is a species of tropical flower native to Mexico, Central America and similar subtropical climates related to the African violet. They’re known for their vibrant colours, coming in shades of orange, red, patterned or spotted white and most notably, purple.
Achimenes are referred to by various names, being nicknamed as ‘hot water plants’, ‘Mothers tears’, ‘Cupid's bow’ or commonly, ‘Magic flower’. These delicate flowers are often grown for local pollinators or easy decoration; as they are relatively easy to grow. Though the leaves are actually edible when cooked, similar to dandelions.
Words by Grey
Achimenes holds the meanings of rare worth, tenderness, joy and love. With a focus on delicacy due to the flowers fickle nature. Epiphyllum - or, ‘Queen of the night’ holds similar meanings, with a stronger focus on the beauty of fickleness. Paired together they send a strong message of tenderness and the beauty of fragility.
The meaning in Floriography likely derives from the plant's name ‘Achimnes’ deriving from the Greek word ‘cheimanos’ meaning tender or sensitive to cold.
General flower meaning: Rare worth, tenderness, joy & love.

This year Cooks Hill Student Syd Hanrahan's little sister, Zara, is swimming for the Starlight Foundation. A nonprofit organisation that supports sick kids in hospitals with education, activities, support and all round a good time. Syd and Zara have first hand experience with the Starlight Foundation when their little brother was ill himself, so supporting the starlight group means a lot to Zara personally. The donations are open until the end of February, she is hoping to reach a goal of $1000 this year! Any amount is welcomed and appreciated.
Support her here!!: https://superswim.org.au/z-hanrahan
