'Action' by Jessica Johnson, for National Reconciliation Week
We acknowledge the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, the traditional custodians of the land on which we learn, work and play. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and honour the role they have in teaching and nurturing our young people on this land. We acknowledge with gratitude that we share this land, and our sorrow for the loss this has entailed. We declare our ongoing commitment to Reconciliation.
Dear CHC,
Happy Holidays! We have made it through a busy term with stories of enormous growth and personal successes.
As we head into our two week holiday break- I encourage everyone to reflect on the term and make sure they achieved “a bit more” than they expected, that they pushed themselves "a bit more” outside their comfort zone and, most of all, they strived to get "a bit more” out of each day.
As 2024 is our year of doing “a bit more” and we are already one quarter of our way through, can I now encourage you to have a wonderful holiday! Doing a bit more: relaxing, reading, binge watching tv, cooking, exercising, enjoying nature, spending time with loved ones and friends, or whatever makes you happy!
If holidays are tricky for you, make sure you access our CHC canvas well-being button. There is a red NEED SUPPORT resource page with heaps of phone call, text and online resources to keep you feeling safe and well.
As a final note- thanks to the amazing staff at CHC who always go above and beyond. You are valued and appreciated.
Enjoy your break, stay safe, stay well.
Kindest Regards,
Quinn Robertson

The period of time I’m planning on researching is from the 1900s(?)onwards"

Asha's agar art
"Agar art is artwork created by culturing bacteria in certain patterns, I created these two pieces with serratia marcescens, bacillus thuringiensis, and micrococcus leteus. They grew overnight after I drew them onto the agar.
I created this agar art because I believe that it shows a synthesis of science and art that can lead to a development in both fields. People lack the knowledge of the myriad positive roles bacteria have on ourselves and our environment, and instead, are so afraid of the term 'germs' or 'bacteria' that the beauty they can produce is never seen. So by creating this piece, I am attempting to bridge this gap."

Lily V's reading response
"My reading response this term was on 'Boy Swallows Universe', which is a fantastic book. I was kind of stuck on how I wanted to respond because I wanted the response to really fit how amazing this book was. I watched the show and read the book so I decided that I would draw a scene in a comic style and take my own creative spin on how I interpreted that scene. I drew the scene where Eli gets his lucky finger cut off because Lyle said something in the air to Gus while he was getting dragged out. The mum got knocked out so I drew that. I wanted to make sure that the freckle was noticeable because that was important in the book but not so much in the show. I really enjoyed doing my reading response this term and I want to read more of trent dalton's work because it was fantastic." - Lily

The human hesitantly shuffled forward, approaching the bars of the cage; face now flushed in light. He tentatively reached a hand through the gap of the bars, holding it there in offering.
”I can show you”
He offered. Hand held out towards the fae, palm up. Lilia hesitated, looking down upon the human’s hand with caution. He didn’t want to step closer and end up getting bitten by the human- But his curiosity was growing. He had no idea of the kind of magic he could use, it could be extremely dangerous. The potential for harm the human could cause was too high for it to be worth it. But, for some reason. Against all his feelings, he pushed away the gnawing fear of the humans potential vices, and took the move to take the humans hand.
Eyes squinted in search for any hint of aggression from the human. Ready to pull his hand back at the slightest movement. His finger brushed the humans palm, testing the waters to see if the human would suddenly snap. Upon finding none, he allowed his hand to slip into theirs.
"You may show me."
Upon gaining permission, he loosely intertwined his fingers with Lilia’s. The two’s hands met, both cold from the chill of the late Autumn wind. The human closed his eyes, taking a slow, shaky breath. A glow began to build, a soft shade of orange, like the beginning bloom of a sunrise. He felt a flood of magic, flowing in between the ridges and bumps of his finger pads. A gentle buzz of warmth grew in his palm, until his hand was a comfortably warm. It was soft, flickering like fire on a snowy night. The human gently let go of him, hand slipping back through the bars of the cell, and he slowly retreated backwards until he was a safe distance from the Fae General.
