Hello, and welcome Grade 6 students!
I'm Mr. Stanhill, and I'm excited to be your English teacher as we navigate a year of literary adventures and writing explorations. This year we will focus on drawing connections between what we read, our experiences, and how we express ourselves through writing and speech. Get ready to showcase your strengths and sharpen your skills!
Hello incoming 6th graders! I’m Mr. Stanhill, and this year we will explore writing as a medium of expression and a vital tool in communication. This year, I am looking forward to learning about your perspectives and experiences through the writing styles you have cultivated thus far. In our continued writing seminars, I encourage you to try new techniques, embrace organization, build a colorful vocabulary, and discover just how exciting writing can be!
In this brief unit we will delve into news publications from the past and present, reminding us that history shapes our world and experiences. Specifically, our focus will be the Taliban and its influence on the country of Afghanistan, alongside the United States’ involvement in Afghan politics. Developing an understanding of these difficult topics will prepare us for our upcoming novel, Shooting Kabul by N.H. Senzai.
The following broad learning categories represent the broad areas of knowledge and skills within which daily and unit-long learning targets and expectations in English can be organized.
RL: Reading Literature
RI: Reading Informational Text
W: Writing
L: Language
SL: Speaking and Listening
Grading Policy
The CDS English Department uses standards based grading to provide more accurate feedback of student performance. The following performance levels are used to convey the level of skill a student has demonstrated in English (refer to image):
Reassessment Policy
When reassessment is offered, students must meet the following requirements:
complete the original task or assessment (summative) by the specified due date
complete all required assignments (formative assessments) leading up to the summative
complete the reassessment form provided by the teacher
complete a mini conference with the teacher (This may include re-teaching/re-learning activities as determined by the teacher.)
The highest summative assessment score is what is entered into Powerschool.
There is a threshold to the reassessments to which students are entitled:
Summative Reassessment Threshold: You are able to reassess ONCE given you satisfy the requirements above. If there is a plan to reassess the same learning outcome, then no additional reassessment is necessary.
Formative Reassessment Threshold: You are provided with UNLIMITED formative reassessments as these types of assessments are solely meant for feedback and improving your skills and abilities in English.
The following final measures of learning may not be reassessed: end-of-course or end of semester exams; culminating projects / performances / papers.
Late Work Policy
All work is expected to be submitted on the day it is due. In the event a student does not submit a summative assessment on the day it is due, that student will…
Be given an opportunity to submit their work up to two weeks after the original due date/time without penalty.
Forfeit their opportunity to be reassessed.
Special considerations may be made for students with extended absences because of sickness, family problems, or family tragedy.
Extra Credit Policy
Extra credit assignments will not be provided.
