Congratulations on your decision to take AP Computer Science A! In this class, we will learn and explore a wide range of topics in the computing world such as the basic understanding of hardware and software and develop programming skills. The primary goal of this class will be for you to learn how to think like a computer scientist which will entail developing algorithms for your needs and to debug (troubleshoot) codes so it works as you intended it.
Course Description:
AP Computer Science A introduces students to computer science through programming. Fundamental topics in this course include the design of solutions to problems, the use of data structures to organize large sets of data, the development and implementation of algorithms to process data and discover new information, the analysis of potential solutions, and the ethical and social implications of computing systems. The course emphasizes object-oriented programming and design using the Java programming language.
Quiz: There will be a bi-weekly quiz to assess student learning.
Project: This class will be heavily project based so you will want to devote a lot of your efforts in creating the best project to your abilities.
PowerUp: Students will not be given homework for this class but are responsible for all classwork that takes place in the classroom.
*You will be required to maintain a weekly journal which will be part of classwork grade
*Participation: Students are expected to follow the appropriate classroom procedures as well as engage in class learning by participating in class. (Semester 1 only)
*Programming Labs: This will be an in-class assignment where students will work in groups or with a partner. The assignment is to be completed during class period. (Semester 2 only)
*Retake Policy: You may have one chance for a quiz re-take during each quarter as long as it is done within the grading period of the semester.
