I chose to include the message of "SOS" on the roof to show how the house is in distress. It is not uncommon for people to write messages like this on a roof if they need to be rescued. These are most common if people’s homes have been flooded to the point where it is no longer safe for them to stay anymore. I chose to write these letters in red because red is often associated with danger.
I placed a little rocking chair in the floodwaters to represent damaged furniture. It is possible for basements to flood during extreme weather events, and it can damage anything that is down there. This rocking chair is inspired by a rocking chair that got damaged when the basement at my house flooded.
In the patchwork of the water, I chose to include brown patterned pieces to show water pollution. During heavy rainstorms, sewers can overflow because most are not built to handle extreme amounts of water in a short amount of time. This, along with trash being picked up by the floodwaters, contaminates an important resource that people rely on. The brown pieces along with the embroidered trash bag and plastic water bottle help show this pollution.
