Uterus

At the center of the quilt block is the image of a uterus with a figure of the Statue of Liberty in the center or the womb. The uterus is designed with embroidered fabric and a patterned floral fabric to represent the womb. The Statue of Liberty is photo transferred onto pink fabric to give a slight pink tint. I chose to include the Statue as a symbol of freedom of choice in America because of the Statue's historical importance of this representation. I focused on the image of a uterus in order to visually demonstrate the female anatomy and to bring focus back to the body of the woman as opposed to the fetus. The placement of the Statue of Liberty mirrors the location of a fetus and inspires the concept of independence and freedom.

"Body" & "Choice"

In the phrase "My Body, My Choice" located around the central image of the uterus, the words "Body" and "Choice" are created with different patterned fabric and embroidery stitching. This reflects the artistic choices of protest signs and banners which use alternating colors and bolded words to capture viewers and convey their message.

Ovaries and Fabric Detail

Attached to the embroidered fabric representing the fallopian tubes are two gold plated circles representing the ovaries. I decided to use gold beads instead of fabric for the ovaries to highlight the origin of the process of  fertilization of an egg into a fetus. The difference in size represents the physical difference in circumferences between both ovaries which is common when women are menstruating. The fabric for the words "My" at the beginning of the main phrase is represented using a similar alternating fabric and embroidery color to mirror the artistic choices of protesters.
