Silhouette

In this part of my quilt project, I decided to cut out 3 different silhouettes. Each of them representing a different person, within each person we have different colors all a neutral palate. In my opinion, I believe these silhouettes bring the quilt together because they represent us but not to just one specific person, but it ranges. I decided to deconstruct the picture and cute up the image to separate each person and play with overlapping and the layout. The stitching was influenced by showing that we are people, and we aren't all perfect.

Quote

The quote I decided to incorporate to tie my piece, is a quote by Barack Obama. "I see what's possible when we recognize that we are one American family all deserving of equal treatment". This quote spoke to me because it was exactly what I wanted to get through when I choose to demonstrate this issue. I decided that I wanted to embroider this part to show that it was not done perfectly like a machine but there is human error. I choose to follow the color palate and stick with neutral tones, to bring back the emphasis on race and the different colors of skin.

Rainbow of skin tones

My central piece, the rainbow of different skin colors, is what I wanted to capture. There are seven different colors, all relating to different colored skins. I wanted for people to see my piece and feel inclusion not exclusion. I wanted to help viewers see that we all are together no matter the skin color. I used different types of fabric, so my piece had dimension and texture.
