Around the border of my piece, I included a variety of phrases in both Spanish and English to represent the ongoing fight for immigrant justice.
At the center of my piece, the U.S. and Mexican flags are tied together with a rope, symbolizing the deep and complex connection along the U.S.- Mexico border. Nineteen clips join the two flags, representing the 19% of the U.S. labor force made up of immigrants. The intentionally messy arrangement of the flags reflects the often tense and complicated relationship between the two nations, as well as the ongoing struggle for inclusivity and mutual understanding.
The Statue of liberty is one of the many cultural symbols included in this piece. It represents the symbol of freedom and cultural exchange, reflecting America’s roots in diversity, immigration, and international friendship.
