I wanted to illustrate the idea that "No Sabo" kids are whitewashed and the feeling of not entirely fitting in. A person's ability to speak Spanish doesn't make them a "bad" Latino or white. The texture of the materials makes the word interesting. Culture, stories, and traditions make someone Latino

At one Texas high school, students had to write down that they wouldn't speak Spanish. The papers were then buried in a box. The school called it a "mock funeral ceremony." Marking the burial sight were crosses that said "Spanish."

Schools would charge students for speaking Spanish. Some schools went as far as charging one cent for every word spoken in Spanish. I was originally going to add many pennies, but since there is only one word in Spanish, I only added one.
(Note: The 50s is when this was most popular, and due to inflation, 1₵ is now about $1.23.)
