This is a closeup of the phrase I embroidered across the top of my block. I wanted to highlight it because it took me a while to get correct, and is also the main message I wanted to convey. This topic was based off of the saying "where they first burn books... ultimately they will burn people too." I wanted to use the eye-catching imagery of a fire to bring more attention to the block.
This closeup is on the little girl. Originally, I was going to do a woman holding books, but again, like the fire, I thought a little girl would evoke more emotion. I image transferred a list of commonly banned books onto a piece of fabric and cut her out of it. Unfortunately, most of the titles didn't get used, but I tried to center her on as many full titles as I could.
This image is a closeup of the embers of the fire. Originally, I was planning on embroidering letters and titles, but I just didn't have the time or ability to do that. I found some knotted yarn to use as the coals and wood.
