“MODEL MINORITY” is embroidered in red thread. Red stands out and indicates harm. I wanted to make sure people knew the term “model minority” causes nothing but harm.
The shirt is made out of Chinese red envelopes. They were sewn together and put on the fabric. They represent my culture and are commonly known for bringing luck. However, I covered the paper with stereotypes / phrases to “ruin” the envelope shirt. The words hide the true meaning and purpose of the envelopes and represent how these misconceptions hide Asian culture and history.
In the yellow thread is my Chinese name. I chose yellow because while it is associated with Asians as our skin color, it is also considered a lucky color in Chinese culture. I put my name to show off my ethnicity and be proud of it. I wanted people to know that I am also 馬慧螢, not just Robyn Mar.
