Dear George Moses Horton Middle School Parents and Guardians,

It's hard to believe we are already in the second week of our final quarter! Our students have returned from spring break refreshed and are diligently focusing on their studies as we approach the end of the school year.

This week marks an important academic milestone as our students will be taking their final NC Check-ins. These assessments help us determine their understanding of the standards we've been teaching throughout the year. Shortly after Easter, we will administer the final STAR assessments, which measure overall student growth and proficiency. The data collected from these assessments will be invaluable as we develop targeted review plans and prepare our students for the upcoming End-of-Grade tests (EOGs).

We have exciting news to share about our student athletes! This Monday evening, we will be celebrating our winning Fall and Winter teams at the Chatham County School Board meeting. We are always proud to highlight the incredible talent our students display both in and out of the classroom.

Please note two important dates on your calendar: there will be no school for students on Friday, April 18th and Monday, April 21st. Our teachers will be participating in district-led professional development on the 21st.

My name is Chasity Byrd and I am the Head Varsity Cheer Coach here at Northwood. We are excited to announce our cheer tryout dates located here at Northwood. Tryouts will be held May 20th-May 22nd from 3:45 PM-5:45 PM in the gym. We look forward to meeting our future cheer athletes from our feeder schools. Listed below are the requirements for tryouts:

Updated Sports Physical (the physical will need to be with them when they tryout)

Zoned for Northwood High School (if students are pending a transfer to attend Northwood for the 2025-26 school year a separate tryout for all incoming new students moving to Chatham and transfer students tryouts will be held July 16th) If you have any questions please feel free to email myself or Paula Justice (pjustice@chatham.k12.nc.us) for any additional questions.

SYSTEMS

PowerSchool is an advanced Student Information System used by schools across the country. Its functions include grading, attendance, and the scheduling of courses. PowerSchool is capable of allowing parents and students to access student grades and attendance in real time, as well as state assessment individual reports. The purpose of this feature is to increase communication and collaboration among parents, students, and teachers. It gives parents and guardians more information about their child’s education and encourages students to take increased ownership of their learning.

Parents/Guardians are provided an opportunity each fall to review their contact information and their student's information in PowerSchool, yet it is important to contact our data manager Mrs. Bland if any parent/guardian or student information has changed at any time during the year. This will ensure families receive all school communications including (but not limited to) report cards, inclement weather notifications, emergencies, and weekly updates from the school.
