The CAM Fellowship of Christan Athletes (FCA) group, along with some kids from the CAM Student Council, traveled to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska to deliver gifts. Small groups of these students put together gift bags that included different items like deodorant, blankets, gloves, etc. collected from our community. The students went in the morning of December 19th and were separated into groups and went to different floors to visit with the veterans at the hospital. Each person went into their rooms to talk to these different men and women and they held conversations about when and where the veteran had served. After getting to know each other, the students would ask if they wanted to pray with or for them. Once all of the gift bags were given away, some candy was left over so everyone passed out chocolate. Overall, it was a great experience to get to know these Veterans and these students will take this with them for a long time.
On December 11th, the CAM High School Student Council held another successful blood drive. There were 63 units of blood collected from the many volunteers, including more than half of whom were students or teachers, who came to donate. Kaylee Hardin commented, “I think that this blood drive went incredibly well, and I think that even with everyone being sick right now, we were still able to pull through. Thank you to everyone who came out to our drive!”

Thursday includes the band and vocal’s soup supper at five, with coronation following at seven. Friday the 20th will have many events, including the Homecoming parade through Anita beginning at 1:30. On April 3, 2019 the CAM Student Council held their second blood drive of the school year in the high school gym. The CAM Student Council started their day early at 7:15, but the preparation for this blood drive started months ago. At this blood drive, they had 62 people register to donate. Out of those 62 people, 58 people were able to donate. The reason why those four people couldn’t donate is typically because of low iron, so next time anyone wants to donate, please eat iron rich food. Out of those 58 people, 10 people donated “Power Red” which is where they just take red blood cells, so they’re donating double the amount of red blood cells than someone who donated “Whole Blood.” Thank you to everyone who helped us reach our goal, and beat our last drive by one unit! With those 58 people donating, the CAM Student Council and Red Cross were able to collectively save 174 lives in a single day. Thank you to everyone who donated or tried to donate!
Amy Heinz started her mission to rescue dogs in the year 2008. Her story starts with one special dog, Gracie, who was running loose on the streets. Amy told a State Trooper that this dog was going to get hit, and he didn’t give her the response she wanted. So, Amy rescued this pup and this marked the start of AHeinz57. Years later, Amy Heinz has these two buildings, all dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats. One side is filled with rescue dogs and the other is filled with dogs who are being boarded. On March 28, the CAM Student Council traveled to DeSoto, IA to see Amy’s mission, and to give their donation from the “Pennies for Paws” fundraiser they held earlier this semester. They raised $600 to donate towards AHeinz57 and all of the amazing work their doing. As some of the CAM Student Council members toured the facilities, the secretary told us that they rescued twenty-some dogs from the floods in Pacific Junction. There were also some dogs that had survived a huge fire, and the rescue team spent hours trying to find those two dogs. Before the Student Council team headed back to school, they got to spend some time with some pups. These dogs had just gotten fixed and were waking up from surgery, so they got to help the “Puppy Patrol” with waking these puppies up. Student Council Advisor, Deb McCann, said, “We got there, and this dog named Fawna jumped right into my arms. It was a great moment. I never realized how much actually went into running an animal rescue, and it was super interesting to find out all of those things.”
On April 3rd, 2019 the CAM Student Council is asking everyone in the community to come to CAM High School and attend their blood drive. This drive is from 8:30-2:30 and they are accepting appointments or walk-ins! They are asking that everyone please take the time to come and save three lives. Back in December, the CAM Student Council held a blood drive and they had 70 people donate, which allowed them to surpass their goal of 57 units. Their goal for this time around is currently at 60 units, but is expected to go up. Blood donations are absolutely crucial, but especially now. With the floods ruining so many homes and effecting so many lives, the blood banks are almost dry. Haley Luke, current junior member, states, “Please come out and donate. You might think that it’ll be someone far away getting your donation, but it might be someone less than an hour away. So please come and donate.”
From February 1-11 the CAM Student Council will have roses and carnations available to be pre-ordered for Valentine’s Day. The red roses are $3, the carnations are $2, and a bundle of three carnations is $5. Each carnation has a meaning behind it, so check out the posters that are in the hallways at the high school. The CAM Student Council will also be selling cookies to give to your Valentine.
For the whole month of February, CAM High School student council will be holding their first annual “Pennies for Paws”. They will be accepting donations to help local shelters. Kaylee Hardin, student council vice president, stated, “We are very excited to be able to make a difference, especially one that will help our furry friends.”
The CAM Student Council is putting on their first annual volleyball tournament benefit on Saturday, November 17, 2018. This will be an annual event that each cause will change year by year. It will take place at the CAM High School gym and the Anita Health and Wellness Center. The cost is $10 per player and there can be 6-10 players on a team. There can only be six players on the court at a time while a maximum of three males on the court at a time as well. Age requirements are anyone in high school and older while the winning team gets a plaque. Team sign-up sheets need to be turned in by November 15 and can be found at the Main Street Market and the CAM High School office. Admission is free will donation for all spectators and the concession stand will be open. If there are any questions, please contact the CAM Student Council at camstuco@cam.k12.ia.us or call/text Deb McCann at (641)-740-1297.
Mark your calendars! The CAM High School is holding their biannual blood drive. It will be held on December 6th in the CAM High School gym. The CAM Student Council and the Red Cross are teaming up to collect lots of donors in order to save lives! We are inviting everyone in the surrounding areas to come and join us for this wonderful event starting at 8:30am and ending at 2:30. You can make an appointment by email at camstuco@cam.k12.ia.us, sign up online at at www.redcross.org, along with accepted walk-ins. Second year Student Council Member Kaylee Hardin was asked about the blood drive and she said, “This will be my second time helping out with the blood drive and I’m really excited to help out. We really encourage everyone who is willing to donate to come out and help save some lives. We exceeded our goals last year, and we hope to do the same this year.”
The CAM Student Council has been preparing for this school year since early May in the ‘17-18’ school year. They have had meetings throughout the summer to outline all their goals for the year and to get a head start on making this year the best year yet. In an interview with Mrs. McCann she said that their goals for this year were to, “Be a more positive group, function together as a team unit, and to make this school year enjoyable for everyone.” She’s certain that this year’s Student Council will be able to accomplish these goals with ease. With this year’s homecoming just a month away, there’s been a lot of planning going into making this a great experience for everyone. This is Mrs. McCann’s first-time taking charge of the homecoming activities and she hopes to, “have a lot of participation and to get everyone included in spirit week.” So, the CAM Student Council is encouraging everyone to show their Cougar Spirit to make this the best homecoming yet.
On Thursday, December 6th from 8:30-2:30, the CAM Student Council is partnering up with the American Red Cross to do their first Blood Drive of the school year. Right now, all of the appointments are filled but they will still be accepting walk-ins throughout the day. There is a huge shortage of blood in the blood banks, so the Red Cross is offering a $5 Amazon gift card and a t-shirt (while supplies last) to people who donate blood. The members of the CAM Student Council will be making goodies and other food for the donors, and the Red Cross will be providing juices, cookies, and chips. There are so many men, women, and children who are in need for blood, and without people donating, they wouldn’t have a chance, so they’re encouraging people to come and donate, and save a life. If you’re 16, you’re able to donate blood with parental consent. If you want to donate but aren’t old enough yet, there will be another blood drive on April 1.
On Thursday, December 6th, the CAM Student Council and the Red Cross teamed up to help save lives. The blood drive went from 8:30-2:30 in the high school gym, and they had a fantastic turnout. The CAM Student Council had most of their appointment slots filled, and accepted at least a dozen walk-ins. At the end of the day, 67 units of blood were collected, which is the largest amount yet. Each unit gives the opportunity to save three lives, so that amounted to around 201 lives saved. To show how amazing that truly is, in December of last year, they only filled 34 units, and then in April they filled 54. The CAM Student Council wanted to make a difference, so they started preparing for this blood drive a few months in advance. They made sure to call as many people as possible, because every drop counts. The CAM Student Council would like to thank everyone who came and donated (or tried to). They would also like to thank the Red Cross for this amazing opportunity to help others. Mark your calendars that on April 1, 2019 there will be another blood drive. The spring goal is to fill 75 units, so please come and donate!
