On Tuesday, November 19th, Jim Field and Becky Christensen from KJAN came to the CAM Digital Media Classroom for a preview party. The preview party was to showcase the students’ work on commercials that they were making for the KJAN business partners. The students in the Digital Media class were assigned different businesses and made commercials for them to be aired on the CAM Cougar Channel. The Digital Media class will be live-broadcasting the home basketball games for both boys and girls. You can listen into the live-broadcast by going to the KJAN website then click on the KJAN video network tab on the right sidebar.
It has been an eventful first couple of months in the Digital Media class. The students have been super busy with projects since the first week. Recently, the class has been asked by the Cass County Health System to create the Relay for Life video to be presented to the public next June during the ceremony. They have also been working on a project called “Why Our Town” for both the towns of Anita and Atlantic. This project is where the students are working with the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and the Anita Development Corp. In early December, four boys are taking the Commercial Drone test so they can obtain their commercial flying license so they can legally sell drone pictures and videos for profit. They have been really busy working with live-streaming school events as well. The students had a successful time live-broadcasting football games and they are already getting things ready for basketball. With the new equipment, the kids are creating vinyl banners for seniors who are participating in sports and will soon branch out to music, speech, FFA, etc. The class recently finished the commercials that were KJAN sponsorships for the CAM Cougar Channel. Each student was involved in creating a commercial to be aired on the CAM Cougar Channel during their home, live-streamed basketball games. There are also multiple students learning about video editing and we hope to have local sponsor, Jared Zimmerline from the Massena Telephone Company, back in the classroom to help them learn more about the editing program. Final Cut Pro. Keep up the hard work!
On Monday, October 21st, The infamous four guys went to the booth for the Junior High football game. Connor McKee, Cavan Murphy, Dietrich Herzberg, and Kolby Nelsen were asked by Coach Ian Hunt to broadcast the junior high football game. Many of the junior high players were nervous until the high school students convinced them they were going to be on live tv. This news helped them to get hyped up to win the game 28-16 in their last game of the season. The high school team is looking forward to welcoming the 8th-grade players next season.
On Friday, October 18th, the four students who have been broadcasting the home football games went to the press box for the last time this season. Connor McKee, Cavan Murphy, Dietrich Herzberg, and Kolby Nelsen went “live” for the CAM vs. CR-B football game. They were excited to find out they would be getting interviewed by Channel 8 and Channel 13 news stations regarding their project. KCCI, Channel 8, from Des Moines was in Anita to cover the football game for their segment called “Game Night.” Nick was from KCCI and He got to talk to the students about their project individually and learned about what they do. WHO Channel 13 TV, also out of Des Moines, came to Anita to talk to the students about their project for their segment called “Friday Wired.” It was a very cool experience for the students and it's sad to say that they won’t broadcast with that team ever again. Mrs. Miller commented afterward, “What an awesome experience for these young men to live-stream the home football games this season! It was certainly an honor for two Des Moines TV stations to travel to Anita and interview our students about this great program that we have at the CAM high school. I couldn’t be more proud of these students!”
On Thursday, October 10th, six students from the Digital Media Class headed to Greenfield for their Speaker Series event. The students were invited by Jason Plourde, the Green Hills AEA Regional Administrator. Jason discussed the Authentic Learning Network that is a growing program through the AEA. The students presented the projects that they are heavily involved in. They provided information and pictures about what they do, as well as answered questions from the audience. The students were very appreciative of the opportunity they were given. They would also like to thank Jason Plourde, Joni Ehm, and the Greenfield Speaker Series for allowing them to come and present their projects.
On Friday, October 11th, Connor McKee, Cavan Murphy, Eyon Steffensen, and Kolby Nelsen were ‘live” as they broadcasted the CAM vs. Boyer Valley football game. The boys got everything set up and in place before starting at 6:45. They covered their fourth home game of the year and another big win for the Cougars. Sadly on Friday, October 18th, the students will broadcast for the last time in the 2019 football season. The Cougars take on the CR-B Crusaders at home as the game is projected to be an exciting one. Everyone comes out to support the 7-0 cougars as they play the biggest game of the season so far. If you can’t make it out, make sure to tune in to the CAM Cougar Channel broadcast. You can find that on the KJAN website in the KJAN video network section and click on the CAM Cougar Channel Tab.
On Wednesday, October 2nd, Jared Zimmerline of the Massena Telephone Company, who is an expert in video production, visited the CAM Digital Media class. Jared attended the University of Iowa and during his time there he worked for the University’s television broadcast station. The broadcast station was formerly known as the Hawkeye Network. He stated that the work he did for the station was very similar to what the students in the Digital Media class are doing. He has nearly four years of experience in multiple phases of the production process including directing, lighting, audio, and editing. Jared came into the classroom to explain some of the skills and tricks he learned about video editing. Everyone who came to listen to Jared is very appreciative of him for coming in and sharing his expertise with us. We look forward to having his assistance throughout the remainder of the school year.
On Tuesday, September 24th, The CAM Digital Media students, along with business partners around the district, came to the CAM High School for a Think Tank. Think Tank was for students to propose their projects and what they do in the Digital Media class to the business partners. After presenting their projects to the partners, the students tried to come up with ways that their projects could help the businesses. Cade Ticknor, Lane Spieker, and Ethan Fast were the three who presented their drone footage and photos. Dietrich Herzberg, Connor McKee, and Kolby Nelsen presented their football live-broadcasting project. Whitney Holaday and Jeremy Kopp presented their Atlantic Chamber of Commerce App that they had created last year in Digital Media. The students are now designing and creating commercials to advertise their partners’ companies. The students would like to thank all of the area businesses once again for coming to the Think Tank and allowing them to work with you.
On Tuesday, May 7th, the Digital Media class traveled to Southwestern Community College in Creston. Their purpose for going was to show the Greenhills AEA what they have been doing throughout the school year. George Couros was the international guest speaker and gave a very inspiring speech about our school system. After listening to the speech, JoAnn Brahms, Whitney Holaday, Andrew Holste, and Teaguen Sothman stood up in front of everyone and spoke about how each of them took part in the class.
On Wednesday, April 17th, the CAM Digital Media class, and our very own newspaper class took a trip to KMTV Channel 3 in Omaha. During our trip, we toured their studio, visited with journalists, producers, and assignment desk staff, and also met two of their morning anchors. After our tour was completed, we enjoyed some grub at Spaghetti Works in the Old Market and finished our day by treating ourselves to candy from Hollywood Candy.
The CAM Digital Media class has been so busy with projects this school year that they are hosting an open house. On April 8th, each class will be invited during 4th block to see what the class is all about. Then, later that day the school board is invited to do the same. Each project will be displayed and there will be snacks and refreshments for those who come.
Several members of the CAM Digital Media (DM) class attended STEM Day at the Capitol, in Des Moines, on February 13, 2019. The students set up their demonstration table in the Capitol Rotunda, along with their CAM Digital Network banner. Prior to the day’s festivities, the DM Students were able to tour the Secretary of State’s office and see the vault where the legislative bills are stored. During the tour, Walker McDermott and Blaire Wendt were offered the opportunity to register to vote while signing their paperwork on the Iowa Constitution glass. Throughout the day, the DM students visited with a number of Iowa Legislators, showing them the different projects they are working on in class. Tom Moore, Iowa Representative, spent time with our students and lead them on a tour of the House Chamber. We met his Legislative Clerk, Josh Wilson, who gave us a tour of the Capitol library and led us up to the top of the dome. The trek to the top of the dome was over 300 steps. We were able to take a picture with Tom Moore in the well of the House Chamber and also many more pictures of the students visiting with other legislators throughout the day. It was a great day and we hope to attend the STEM Day at the Capitol next year. Those attending were Walker McDermott, Blaire Wendt, Teaguen Sothman, Jeremy Kopp, Connor McKee, Whitney Holaday, Ethan Arp, and Eyon Steffensen.
The CAM Digital Media Class (DM) has been very busy working on existing projects, as well as taking on new ones. The class would like for the community to know what they are working on and the some of their upcoming events. As of last week, DM took on another community business partner, Ag 4 All. Representatives from Ag 4 All met with our students to discuss some of the tasks and projects they are asking assistance with. Remember our motto is: “Your problem is our project!” We will start working with them this week. There will be another potential area partner coming to visit the class in early February as well. The current projects that the class has taken on are the KJAN project of filming and live-streaming the home basketball games. Eyon Steffensen and Tanner Williamson are calling play-by-plays along with the live-streaming, and interviewing athletes, coaches, and others during the halftimes and between games. JoAnn Brahms and Josie Williamson have been operating the camcorder to obtain the video footage. To watch the livestream, go to the KJAN website (www.kjan.com) and click on the CAM Cougar channel on the right sidebar. That will take you to the screen that is displaying the game. Students also covered the Atlantic/CAM wrestling meet last Thursday, January 17th. Another project DM is tackling is the App for the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce. Ethan Arp, Whitney Holaday, and Jeremy Kopp have been working diligently to make this happen. This is a giant undertaking, which is taking most of the school year. There is no other Authentic Learning Network school that has been given this fantastic learning opportunity. Josie Williamson has mastered the new Portfolio system that we will be rolling out to the student body in the next month. Our video announcements have been coming out on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Walker McDermott and Andrew Holste are the news anchors, along with Blaire Wendt helping with weather. Andrew is also interviewing the student and athlete of the week when time allows. Darien Burnisen is our videographer for the announcements. Connor McKee and Teaguen Sothman have been our video editors for the announcements and the athlete videos that you have seen on Twitter. Bionca and Blaire Wendt are the Communications Specialists who are responsible for getting the pictures and information put on our Twitter and Facebook accounts. Jevon McDuff has been helping with video and was responsible for creating the new FFA website. The STEM BEST grant is allowing the class to purchase new equipment and a new collaborative classroom design. That will be in place within the next month. We will post pictures of our new classroom when it’s complete. Several members of the Digital Media class will be traveling to Iowa State Capitol on February 13th to attend the STEM Day at the Capitol. Governor Kim Reynolds will be in attendance and our DM students will be showing off their work on our projects. Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Ehm from the Greenhills AEA will be accompanying them. On May 7th, the Digital Media class will be attending the GHAEA/UCDA Partners In Innovation & IowaALN Showcase at SWICC in Creston. They will have the opportunity to show off their work for the school year as well.
