Cam Alum Returns to Spread Knowledge

Mr. Ticknor is the new Special Education teacher at CAM high school. He graduated from CAM in 2016 and went to Grand View University in Des Moines. He started as a Kinesiology major, but quickly switched to education after finding his passion working with kids. This is Mr. Ticknor’s first job teaching out of college. He says he chose the teaching profession because he really enjoyed seeing students achieve the goals they have set. In addition, he has been coaching baseball here for the past three years, and is currently coaching football. Coaching and sports is another passion of his due to his participation in sports all through high school. He grew up on a farm Southeast of Massena, and he helped on the farm as much as he could outside of school and sports. Mr. Ticknor says he is very excited to teach in the same halls he was taught in! Welcome back Mr. Ticknor!

New Science Teacher at CAM

The last New Staff Article introduces Mrs. Larson, CAM’s new English/Language Arts teacher! Before she became a teacher, she was a newspaper journalist for 10 years. She received her degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a degree in Journalism and Public Relations, as well as a minor in History. Her position at CAM marks her 21st year of teaching. She enjoys working with her students because they are open and respectful in her classroom. She also likes how welcoming and patient the staff is. She grew up in Strawberry Point, Iowa, which has roughly 14,000 habitants. She has two siblings, an older and younger brother. She chose to teach because of her connections to the athletes and students she interviewed during her newspaper career, which led to her deciding to leave journalism because she spent more time trying to get positive stories into the paper than she should have, when her bosses wanted stories that would sell. After bouncing from newspaper jobs, she decided to retire and go to the University of Northern Iowa to earn a teaching degree in English Education. Welcome to CAM, Mrs. Larson!

Mr. Todd Greeted By CAM High School

This new issue of the CAM Spy presents our final new staff interview, Mr. Todd! He teaches Chemistry, Physics, 6th Grade Science & Tech, and 8th Grade 21st Century Skills. Before becoming a teacher at CAM, he worked at Clarinda Academy for approximately 15 months. Mr. Todd graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and Secondary Education in Chemistry at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. 2019 marks Mr. Todd’s 3rd year of teaching, having taught 2 years prior to arriving here. Mr. Todd enjoys being part of a smaller community, since he feels his actions have a larger impact, as opposed to the prior places he has been to. Mr. Todd grew up in Portland, Oregon, and he has a younger sister, a father who served in Vietnam, and a really kind mother who used to work as a bank teller. He had two options when applying for a job: he could have chosen a job that wasn’t fulfilling, or a job that would allow him to make the aforementioned impacts, the latter of which he chose, and I’d personally say that was a good decision. Welcome to CAM, Mr. Todd!

CAM High School Welcomes New Secretary

Mrs. Farrell is the new secretary at CAM High School. When asked if Mrs. Farrell is enjoying her job, she replied, “I am really liking it, and it is never boring.” She claimed that she always has work to do and that’s what she likes so much about her job. Mrs. Farrell likes that the staff and students have treated her with patience while she is learning. She is happy that she is starting to learn the kids’ names. Her favorite thing about her job is that she is constantly learning something new and getting connected with the people in the community every day. She previously worked in customer service where she sat at a desk and never got to see people. Mrs. Farrell enjoys meeting new people and interacting with the students. She is married to Mr. Farrell who is the vocal teacher here at the CAM Community School District. She claimed that lunchtime had been the largest adjustment to the job, but is now one of her favorite things after getting to know the students’ names. She noticed right away that registration week was overwhelming, but she enjoyed meeting approximately 250 new families. Welcome to CAM High School, Mrs. Farrell!

Welcome Mr. Folgeman

Mr. Fogleman is the new At-Risk Coordinator/Online College Supervisor at the CAM High School for the 2019/2020 school year. Mr. Fogleman is also the P.E. teacher for two of the six P.E. classes. He claims that he really enjoys working with high school students. He also says that since he is new, he still has a lot of work to do with scheduling and helping the students in the best possible way for them. The biggest change in his job is that he believes that he needs to provide a different form of support for the students. As the elementary principal, he was looked to for the answers, while his job at the high school is to research and find the answers alongside the students. When asked what is his favorite age group to work with, he responded, “That is a tricky question, each group has its own challenges, celebrations, and uniqueness with working with students. The way you build a relationship with a student is very important and you need to take a different route for that due to maturity and age.” He has been married to his wife Abby for over two years. He has three children, Kanii is eight years old, Keaton is one year old, and Cori is five months old. His family enjoys going to the park and any type of vehicle trips. They enjoy going to the zoo and the lake house at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. When asked if coaching in addition to teaching was something he enjoyed doing, he said that coaching is something that is continued with being a teacher. He believes that it is a different form of teaching where the students and athletes learn valuable lessons in different forms. He also plans on continuing coaching football, assistant girls basketball, and an assistant track coach if he is able to. He understands the importance of the assistant coach and has accepted that role. Welcome to CAM High School, Mr. Fogleman.

CAM High School Welcomes New Superintendent

Paul Croghan is the new superintendent at CAM High School. He recently worked as a superintendent in the East Mills School District. When asked what other positions he has held, he responded with multiple other positions, such as a high school principal, an activities director, a technology coordinator, as well as a math and P.E. teacher. He also has coached and driven the bus to sporting events, and worked in lawn care. Mr. Croghan’s first impression of CAM High School was that the school district is a progressive rural Iowa district, making education a number one priority. He appreciated the welcoming district and noticed how the staff always puts the students first. Mr. Croghan plans to work on facility plans, and student achievement will be the first priority. He also wants to focus on the study of all systems and learn how they work, and what could be done to improve where we are at this point. Mr. Croghan has five children with his wife Brenda, whose names are Kegan, Carsen, Kelsey, Kendra, and Kassidy. Kegan is in 7th grade, Carsen is a sophomore, Kelsey is a school nurse at East Mills, Kendra is a radio technician at CCHS, and Kassidy is currently attending her 1st year at DMACC. A hobby that the Croghan family has is roofing. They take on roofing jobs as a family as well as working with anything associated with farming. Don’t be surprised if you see Mr. Croghan at school events because he claimed, of course I will be there.

New Harmony Comes to CAM

Mr. Farrell is our new vocal teacher at CAM. This is his first teaching job and he just finished getting his teaching degree in the spring. He graduated from Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA. When asked if he always knew he wanted to be a teacher, he said, “I had a great band teacher in middle school and high school. He made such an impression on me that I decided as an 8th grader, that I wanted to be a band teacher. During college, I discovered that I really enjoyed teaching vocal music. I have greatly enjoyed teaching choir with the students here at CAM Middle School and High School. I owe a lot to that band teacher who invested so much in me.” Mr. Farrell has a wife whose name is Paige and he said they felt very welcomed by the school and the community. When asked what his favorite quote is, he said, ““Where words fail, music speaks.” ― Hans Christian Andersen.” Mr. Farrell chose to come to CAM because he has family who lives close to here and during the interview he could tell CAM cares about their students. Mr. Farrell answered, “Sock sock, shoe shoe because the other way seems cumbersome” when he was asked how he puts on his shoes. His dream car is 2019 Honda Odyssey because he really likes minivans.

The Scientist is in!

Before coming to CAM, Mrs. Thomas taught at Griswold, Northeast Hamilton, and AGWSR. Because she graduated from CAM, and she considers this home, she decided to come back to teach. Mrs. Thomas’s hometown is Wiota, Iowa. Although she is a teacher now, that wasn’t always her plan. She originally wanted to become a veterinarian, but that didn’t quite

work out for her, so she needed something else. She got her Biology degree at Benedict College and her teaching license from Kaplan University. Mrs. Thomas’s dream car is a brand new Chevy Silverado pickup truck. When asked how she prepares for the morning, her response was, “sock sock, shoe shoe.”
