Fantastic Wrestling Season Closes With Memorial Banquet

The Atlantic-CAM wrestling team wrapped up a season of success with the annual banquet on Monday, March 11th. The Trojans finished the year with a staggering 20-0 dual record, winning the conference dual and tournament titles for the second time in three years, winning the prestigious John J. Harris Tournament, among many other accomplishments throughout the season. Before the awards portion of the banquet began, the first four-time state champion in Iowa, Bob Steenlage, gave an inspiring speech about his life and the obstacles he had to overcome in order to get to the level of success that he had. CAM sent six wrestlers to Atlantic this season. Two seniors, Mitchell Williamson and Sam Martin, two sophomores, Noah Riker and Jaxson Bell, and two freshmen, Nolan Hensley, and Ethan Follmann. Three of these athletes received varsity letters: Sam Martin, Mitchell Williamson, and Jaxson Bell. The team also had one senior manager, McKenna Stuhr. Among the many awards given out at the banquet, one of the winners from CAM was Ethan Follmann, who received the JV Competitor Award for his dominate JV season, as well as showing some success at the varsity level in the few meets he participated in. Brian South, an eighth-grade junior high wrestler from CAM received the Leadership Award for his leadership role on the junior high team. New to the banquet was the Rex Mehrhoff award that was given to the athlete who portrayed the traits and principles that Coach Mehrhoff preached in his years as a wrestling coach. This award was given to Cale Roller, the 220-pound state qualifier from Atlantic. The banquet wrapped up with coaches and senior gifts, followed by a video recapping the season’s highlights.

McLaren and Pellet End Their High School Career on the Podium

On Thursday, February 14th, The Atlantic/CAM wrestling team took five wrestlers to State. These five wrestled their hearts out over the weekend and left it all on the mats. 220 lb junior, Cale Roller wrestled three times. He won one match by a pin, and lost two matches, one by tech-fall, and one by a fall. Freshman, Garrett McLaren, wrestled twice at 106 lbs, but fell to both of his opponents. Joe Weaver, a 126 lb sophomore, also had the chance to wrestle twice but fell to both opponents. Senior, Connor Pellett wrestled five times at 152 lbs. Connor finished his wrestling career placing 8th at State! Pellett stated, “My goal this year was to medal at the state tournament. It meant I had to be one of the best wrestlers in the state and improve upon last year’s results. With help from my family and friends I was able to achieve my goal and there’s truly no better feeling than that.” Chase McLaren, 138 lb senior, wrestled four times. Chase ended his wrestling career in 2nd place at State! McLaren commented, “I want everyone to know that I gave it everything I had. I didn’t leave with what I wanted, but I cannot thank my coaches, teammates, and fans enough for the support. I truly believe my wrestling career is just beginning, and I will continue to shoot for the stars.”

H-10 Conference Champions

Due to weather, on Thursday, January 24th, the Atlantic/CAM wrestling team hosted a single dual vs St. Albert. Senior, Mitchell Williamson, pinned his opponent, Ben O’Niell, at 1:37. Senior, Sam Martin, sophomore, Jaxson Bell, and freshman, Ethan Follmann all won by forfeits. All odds were in favor of the Atlantic/CAM team as the ending score was 84-0. On Saturday, January 26th, the Atlantic/CAM JV traveled to Audubon to take part in the Wheeler Invitational. Freshman, Ethan Follmann placed fourth, due to a knee injury in his first match of the day. Freshman, Nolan Hensley placed 6th in his bracket. The Varsity team traveled to Shenandoah for the Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament. There were 12 place-winners, seven finalists, and four individual champions. Bell placed 6th in his bracket, while Martin placed 5th. The team captured the Hawkeye Ten Conference Wrestling Tournament Title with 224 points.


Wrestlers Set to Takedown the Competition

The wrestling season began on Thursday, November 29, with a quad dual against Audubon, Clarinda, and Griswold, in Audubon. The Atlantic-CAM wrestling team came home with three victories from the night. The Trojans defeated Audubon by a score of 66-10, Clarinda 51-30, and Griswold 66-16. These three wins gives the Trojans a 3-0 start on the dual season, and a 1-0 beginning to the Hawkeye 10 conference race. Jaxson Bell was CAM’s lone varsity wrestler on Thursday. Bell finished the night with three falls to help the team tremendously. The following day, the Atlantic-CAM wrestling team travelled to Humboldt for the Joe Fitch Invitational. The team ended up placing third by .5 points. CAM had two varsity wrestlers at the meet, Jaxson Bell and Sam Martin. Jaxson ended the night placing 5th and Sam placed 4th. The wrestling team had a successful first week, and look to continue to improve as the season progresses.

Wrestlers Match Up With Stiff Competition

The Atlantic-CAM wrestling team had a week of back-to-back competition. Starting out on Tuesday, the Trojans faced two top Hawkeye 10 opponents in Red Oak (ranked 5th in the preseason) and Creston. The wrestling team topped the Tigers by a score of 48-23, and defeated the Panthers 40-27. The Trojans improve to 3-0 in conference duals. Mitchell Williamson and Jaxson Bell represented CAM at the varsity level for the dual. On Friday and Saturday, the Trojans traveled to Council Bluffs for the annual Council Bluffs Classic, held at the Mid-America Center. With 40 teams from 5 states, it is one of the largest tournaments in the Midwest. CAM had 3 representatives; Ethan Follmann, placing 19th at 113 pounds, Jaxson Bell, placing 27th at 132 pounds, and Mitchell Williamson, placing 21st at 182 pounds. The JV team wrestled at Southeast Polk where Sam Martin and Nolan Hensley participated.

Wrestlers Continue Their Quest For Titles

On Thursday, December 13th, the Trojans took on two conference opponents in Lewis Central and Kuemper Catholic. The Trojans came out victorious with scores of 52-30 over Lewis Central and 57-18 over Kuemper Catholic. Jaxson Bell wrestled 132 and went 0-2 on the night, and Mitchell Williamson won his first match by pin at 195 and took a forfeit in the second dual. The Trojans travelled to Southeast Polk on Saturday where Mitchell Williamson placed 5th in the 182 pound weight class with a 3-2 record on the day. The team placed fourth overall trailing behind Southeast Polk, Bettendorf, and Iowa City West. The wrestlers will head to Eddyville-Blakesburg High School on Saturday, December 22. It will be a dual tournament format, and will be the last competition of the first half of the wrestling season.

Wrestlers Head to Logan


On Saturday, January 5th, the Atlantic/CAM JV traveled to Logan for a wrestling tournament. Senior, Sam Martin was awarded 2nd place, winning three out of the four of his matches. Freshman, Ethan Follmann won all four of his matches and received first place. Nolan Hensley, also a freshman, won one out of the four of his matches placing third. It was an overall successful day for the Atlantic/CAM team.


Wrestlers Travel to Marion

On Friday, January 11th, the Atlantic/CAM wrestling team traveled to Marion to participate in the Loyd Schafer Tournament on Saturday. Chase McLaren, a senior from Atlantic, was the champion of the 138-pound weight class. The boys wrestled their hardest and brought home second place! Come out and support the wrestlers on Thursday, January 17th, as they will be hosting a double dual in Atlantic.
