On Saturday, March 30th, the CAM Dance Team hosted their annual Dance Camp for elementary and middle school students. This year had the highest participation number with 59 girls in the classes of kindergarten to 8th grade. The kindergarten and 1st-grade classes danced to the song “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” which was choreographed by Paige McAfee, Halee Nichols, and Mallarie Peach. The 2nd and 3rd-grade classes did a jazz routine to the song “Clumsy” by Fergie, which was taught by Paige Jensen, Shelby Stephenson, and Bionca Wendt. The 4th and classes performed a pom routine to the song “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz, which was instructed by Kylie Alff, Abby Follmann, Madison Holtz, and Jade Jackson. The middle school students danced to the song “Determinate” from the movie Lemonade Mouth, which was coached by Mercedes Harris, Kintrell Davis, and Halie Giegerich. Coach Amanda Wahlert commented, “This year's dance camp was another great day for our youth to spend time with the high school dance team doing something not everyone gets a chance to do on a weekly basis. The way these high school dance team members take responsibility for these young kids by spending the morning teaching them something they care so deeply about is such a joyful experience. These young dancers look up to the high school dance team members and it truly shows every year that we hold this camp. I couldn’t be more proud of the 2019 dance team members and the memories we have made this year.”
Before the 2018/2019 Dance Team season is officially wrapped up, they will be hosting their annual Dance Camp for elementary and middle school students. The students will be split up into separate groups, depending on their grades, and will learn dances that the high school dance team members choreographed! It will be held on March 30th starting at 9 am and will be performed at 12:30. Everyone is welcome to come watch all of these performances! There will be a free will donation at the door.
During halftime of the boys game on January 25th, Villa Dance Company put on their annual hip hop halftime performance, but this time was different. The dancers wanted to pay their respects to the Wollum family by having all CAM dancers on the team hold up their sweatshirts with the “Brooks” shirt underneath. The CAM high school dancers included Halie Giegerich, Bionca Wendt, Blaire Wendt, Savanna Valeika, Kylie Alff, and Natalie Blaine.
This year’s 2018/2019 CAMDance Team consists of 18 dancers, 17 girls and one boy. They are continuing to learn and practice their dances for Tackle Hunger, September 21st, and Homecoming, September 28th. The team is excited for this year and what is to come. The Dance Team coach, Amanda Wahlert, commented, “Our main goal is to compete at the Iowa State Dance Team Championships this year. I’m excited for the fun group of kids that are willing to try new things every year!”
On November 29th, the CAM Dance Team traveled to the Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines to compete in the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Competition, put on by the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association (ISDTA). They performed a Class 2 jazz routine and competed against 11 other teams from all over Iowa. Their day started at 6:00 am in the high school locker room, putting on makeup and doing their hair. They performed at 11:34 and watched other schools’ routines until the awards at 8:00 pm. For the awards, each team was announced as they entered the court. There were 251 teams, with over 5,000 dancers, who filled the arena floor with excitement. The CAM Dance Team was awarded with a Division 1 Rating, scoring over 60 points.
