Using HLG and other Picture profiles on the Sony Z90
HLG (Hybrid log Gamma) and Sony SLog-2 and 3 are picture profiles that give you greater dynamic range (or latitude) than Standard (or PP off) when filming scenes with high contrast. This is particularly useful in sunlight, harsh lighting conditions and situations where there are light sources in shot. HLG It is not as flat as Sony’s SLog profiles, but is easier to grade and expose when filming.
Here are some Youtube videos about HLG with some happy users:
On the left hand side of the camera, press the PICTURE PROFILE button.
Navigate to PP1.
You could choose any one of these as you are going to select HLG within the Profile.
Select SETTING
Then go down to GAMMA and choose HLG from the Gamma options.
It is here that you choose any of the other Gamma settings like Cine 4 or S-LOG2 or 3
Go back to the setting page and choose 709 for the COLOUR MODE
Go back to the setting page, then scroll down to DETAIL, select the arrow then select LEVEL and using the slider go left to minus 3.
The Z90 gives a very sharp detailed image in HD or 4K, so to make the image a little softer and less video-like, we can reduce the detail.
You are done with this page now. So you can just press the PICTURE PROFILE button on the side of the camera to exit the menu.
The image recorded to the card will be much lower contrast and a little softer.
Now let's put some compensation in the viewfinder to help you expose.
Press the Menu button on the side of the camera and go down to DISPLAY SET.
Scroll down within this menu to GAMMA DISP ASSIST
Then choose ON to select the view assist for HLG (709) then return.
Happy shooting!
