In the rotoscoping example, we want to insert text into a film clip using the Roto Brush tool, so that the text sits between the background and the person walking across the screen.
In the example project, text has been added to the composition as a new layer on top of the film layer.
When the comp is played back and the person walks across the shot, the text is on top of him.
The effect we want to achieve by using the Roto Brush Tool is for the text to appear behind the person.
To achieve this, firstly, duplicate the footage layer and place this layer at the top of the composition. The text should now not be visible as it is hidden behind the duplicate layer.
Double click on the layer, so that you are now working on just this layer (not the composition).
Remember to return to the composition, click on the Comp tab.
Select the Roto Brush Tool
A green brush spot should appear, click & drag a line within the outline of the person you want to keep in the shot.
A pink selection line should surround the person.
As you move through the footage you will need to check and amend the selection.
Click and drag (with the green + marker) to add to the selection.
Press Alt (for the red - marker), click and drag to remove from the selection.
When you select the Composition to playback the footage, you should now see the person walk across the front of the text layer and the original background layer.
