Razal Zapanta

What is your name and major?

My name is Razal Zapanta and I am a Biology major.

Three words to describe yourself?

Determined, Loving, Creative.

Plans in the future?

I am applying to dental school this cycle to pursue my dream of becoming a singing dentist! During my gap year, I will be working as a dental assistant and composing my original music on the side!

Most exciting time in APU?

I was recently a contestant on the game show, Wheel of Fortune, and I represented APU during "College Week Spring Break!" This once-in-a-lifetime experience was the highlight of my senior year because I won the game show, and I made friends with the contestants from different colleges! Additionally, I loved being a member of the APU acapella group, Asian American Leadership Group, and a Freshman RA at Trinity Hall.

Advice for continuing students?

Never stop doing the things you love to do! Music helped me get through the difficult times of being a Biology major! I would go to the music practice rooms to play piano and sing for an hour once a week! Taking breaks to do something you love will help you in the long run! Additionally, get to know your professors and peers because the right people will support you and help you succeed throughout your APU journey.

Morgan Diers

What is your name and major?

My name is Morgan and I am a Biology major.

Three words to describe yourself?

Caring, Determined, Easy Going.

Plans in the future?

I plan on gaining more work experience and then applying for Genetic Counseling programs!

Most exciting time in APU?

The most exciting time was living with my best friends junior year in Bowles!

Advice for continuing students?

My advice would be to trust yourself! One of the things that held me back during my undergrad was doubting my own abilities; so I would definitely advise continuing students to begin believing in yourself and building your confidence early on. You are capable of way more than you think you are! Surround yourself with people who will encourage you and support you on your journey.

Hannah Mae G. Ftaieh

What is your name and major?

My name is Hannah Mae G. Ftaieh and my major is Biology.

Three words to describe yourself?

Caring, Amiable, Observant.

Plans in the future?

My hope is to go to Medical School after my growth year, and late specialize in either Cardiology or Nephrology, while still making time for music on the side. Ultimately, I want to live abroad and travel as much as possible.

Most exciting time in APU?

Man, there's quite a ton of them. Any and all memories with my roomates, going to mass with friends, hosting thanksgiving at my apartment for international students, praying in Tagalog at ichapel, and going up to Lake Tahoe.

Advice for continuing students?

These years are the years when you will grow, learn, and experience a ton. So my advice would be to do the exact things that make you uncomfortable, i.e. attending events where you know no one. Be involved in as many extra curriculars, clubs, and volunteer opportunities as you can possibly handle. Hold on to your passions and hobbies as a gentle reminder of why you're doing the degree you're doing. Remember that growth isn't linear. Habitually change your study-spots to keep things interesting and maybe even surround yourself with trees. Look out for yourself and for your friends. Be curious and genuine, especially in your relationships. Strive not only for academic growth but also for personal growth. Most of all, constantly remind yourself that God's got you, presently and in your future plans.

Most exciting time in APU?

My most exciting time at APU was developing meaningful relationships with fellow classmates, faculty, and the Azusa community for all four years. They are the ones who made the APU experience incredibly memorable.

Advice for continuing students?

Stress is inevitable when it comes to school so it is important to take self-indulging breaks like eating a meal, watching mindless videos, taking a nap, calling loved ones, or hanging out with your friends! We all need to reenergize ourselves before true learning is accomplished!

Sandra Bakhit

What is your name and major?

My name is Sandra Bakhit and I am a Biology major with a Psychology minor.

Three words to describe yourself?

Driven, Compassionate, Light-Hearted.

Plans in the future?

I'm planning to take a gap year and apply to medical school.

Most exciting time in APU?

I really enjoyed the simple moments like the late nights I would have with my roomates playing card games, watching movies, or even staying late at the library together. One of the other exciting moments is when I got to go on a backpacking trip in Utah. It was my first time going backpacking and it was one of the experiences that I really enjoyed and I'm glad I decided to go out of my comfort zone and go on it.

Advice for continuing students?

I would say to give yourself grace. There are times when things won't go according to the plan but continue to trust in yourself. Everyone learns in a different way, so try to find what works best for you and don't compare yourself to other people. Try to get out of your comfort zone and get involved in anything that interests you. You never know what will come out of it and the people you will meet.

I will be taking a gap year where I will be working on a manuscript with Dr. Chen, working as a medical scribe, and working in a neurology lab at Loma Linda before attending M.D./Ph.D. school. I hope to one day work in clinical research with Alzheimer's disease patients.

Most exciting time in APU?

I definitely think some of the most fun and exciting times I had at APU were studying late at night with friends and roommates. I remember studying for a genetics exam at 2am in one of the duke rooms (hiding from campus safety to study) and we were all racing chairs to get energy to keep studying. These late night study sessions were some of the most funny moments I have had at APU and they led to great friendships that I believe will be long-lasting.

Advice for continuing students?

TALK TO YOUR PROFESSORS! I think that many students are wary of going to office hours or talking after class with their professors, but I have to say that they are not only amazing and fun people to be around, but they truly have our best interest in mind. They will help you through APU and allow you to become someone who is prepared for a career beyond your time in undergrad. Plus, you might just make friends with some of them along the way!

Honglan Le

What is your name and major?

Hi! My name is Honglan Le, and I'm a Biochemistry major and Honors Humanities minor (and then some)!

Three words to describe yourself?

Curious, Meticulous, Spontaneous.

Plans in the future?

After graduation, I'm starting EMT school over the summer. Currently, I'm also applying to APU's Master's in Public Health program for the Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 semester! I eventually hope to go to PA school and even get involved in clinical/biomedical research and healthcare administration later on down the road.

Most exciting time in APU?

There're so many! My time in Israel before the pandemic...splitting COS-7 cells...late night celebratory Donut Man runs with my friends (music blaring, windows down)...or mixing sound for kaleo chapel as a studio audio technician...

One particularly exciting moment came to mind though: I was a TA for Mr. Dr. Huang's organic chemistry lab for a semester. Toward the end of one lab, I remember being startled off of my feet by a loud *POP* in the back of the room. This was only a few feet from one of my peers in the lab (you know who you are haha). Turns out, someone had left the empty melting point apparatus turned up to its max temperature, and the liquid in its thermometer had expanded so much, it burst. The thermometer head had shot up out of the apparatus and pierced the ceiling, suspended. I'm sure the hole it left behind is still there!

Advice for continuing students?

1) Don't ever let anyone, anything, or any circumstance rob you of genuine love for learning. College is not just a means to an end.

2) College teaches us how to learn, how to think, and gives us the knowledge to better inform how we learn and think. But, college also teaches us how to be a better person...a better friend...better at pursuing the Lord. Frankly, if we fail to learn both sets of things, we've missed the point of college.

3) It's a huge privilege getting to study science from Christian professors in a God-centered university. Take advantage of it!

4) College is temporary. But, sometimes, you find your family in college...and family was never meant to be temporary. Fight to take care of one another.

Most exciting time in APU?

It was really exciting being an RAR with the best RA, Adam Huxell. We served the freshman Honors guys in Engstrom and developed great relationships with the guys of our hall. Throughout this experience, we had lots of fun events and game nights, as well as spontaneous hang outs and lots of good times.

Advice for continuing students?

My main advice for continuing students is to get to know your professors. They are really nice and provide guidance in more than just the subject material you are learning in class. I have loved getting to know the professors at APU and have learned a lot from them about career goals, life, and the relevant subject.

Most exciting time in APU?

My most exciting time was during organic chem labs when we got to synthesize various compounds, or the Midnight Breakfasts where we crammed in notes as we ate cereal at midnight.

Advice for continuing students?

Make time for yourself to recover (especially after an exam) because your health is the basis for any other success. Remember that your classmates and especially your professors want to help you. Never be afraid to ask for/about something, because the only bad question is the one that goes unsaid. Good luck, you're gonna be okay no matter how crazy everything seems!

I will be attending Vanderbilt University in Fall, where I will begin studying for my PhD in Chemistry.

Most exciting time in APU?

I have had so many great memories here at APU, so it is difficult to choose ONE specific time. My sophomore year was filled with exciting and spontaneous adventures, as well as transformative service opportunities both locally and abroad. So if I had to pick my "most exciting time," I would go with my sophomore year as a whole. Great memories.

Advice for continuing students?

Be present and enjoy the moment. Nothing is guaranteed in life, and in reality God only knows what is in store for our future. So enjoy those late nights suffering with your classmates, the early morning lectures that you barely make it on time, and all the fun that comes with being a student at APU. Your time in college is truly a blessing from God, so be present today and let tomorrow worry about itself (Matthew 6:34).

You find where you belong when you spend time with those who care about you the most. Don't let your best day define who you are. Don't let your worst define who you are. Live in the present. Read Proverbs daily.

Not sure! But I am excited to see what is in store!

Most exciting time in APU?

My most exciting time at APU has been going to Pepe's Tacos every Wednesday with my professors and fellow peers in the research department. It has been so fun getting to fellowship each week with people I care deeply about. It has become a sweet tradition that I will miss.

Advice for continuing students?

Don't be afraid to change your path. If you find something halfway or more through college that you really want to do, go for it! Also, don't be afraid to join an extracurricular that you are passionate about. Do not take on more than you can handle, but prioritize what makes you happy. Take breaks!! It is very easy to get burnt out, so take care of yourself! Your wellbeing comes first. And finally, talk to your professors and get to know them! They care for you and want you to succeed. I will be forever thankful for my mentors I have met at APU. Enjoy the experience, you won't get a chance to do undergrad again! Best of luck to you!!

Tayo Agbalaya

What is your name and major?

My name is Tayo Agbalaya and I am majoring in Applied Mathematics with a Physics concentration, and a minor in Computer Science.

Three words to describe yourself?

Creative, Relational, Innovative.

Plans in the future?

I'm currently working at NASA JPL as a part time software engineer! This has been an extremely eye opening time where I've learned that you can only reach for the stars if you have a team helping you get there. This being said, I hope to continue my work here at NASA or at another Space/Tech company which emphasizes the importance of the collective as they strive to create technologies which help humanity for the better.

Most exciting time in APU?

My most exciting time at APU had to have been while I was sitting on Cougar walk with our former university president and my mentor Jon Wallace. As I was telling him about my plans to run for student body president and my plans to pursue the woman who would later become my girlfriend, a squirrel fell about 30 feet out of the top of a tree right in front of us and smacked the ground hard enough to suggest it died on impact. However, after taking a quick breather and laying motionless for about 7 seconds, it quickly scurried back into the tree from which it fell. This was by far one of my most exciting memories of my time at APU.

Advice for continuing students?

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life... Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?... But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these will be given to you" Matthew 6:23, 27, and 33 & “I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.” -Andy Bernard, The office. It's so easy to stress about the future and worry about what awaits you. In fact, these feelings of stress and worry are the status quo for college students around the world. However, our legacy as APU students isn't to be like the rest of the students around the world. Therefore, my first piece of advice is the advice of Jesus. Seek first the righteousness of God and he will handle the rest. Trust me, he will. My second piece of advice, enjoy today because today is the day you'll be recollecting upon tomorrow and the rest of the days to come. Value those random conversations, go on those late night taco runs, and take time to know your faculty. These are the good old days, so you might as well make them good while you're still in them :)

Cameryn Nakamura

Most exciting time in APU?

I really enjoyed getting to plan out my own research project in my biochemistry class with my group members. Even though it was really hectic and stressful, it was a great learning experience and very satisfying. It was disappointing that we didn't get to actually carry out our research due to the pandemic but I'm really grateful for the process.

Advice for continuing students?

Don't stress about the future too much. Everything is in God's plan so don't sweat over the little things or even things that seem big. You might not end up where you want to be initially but God works in funny ways and will always use whatever circumstance you're in to grow and do good works in you.

Outgoing, Hoping, Caring.

Plans in the future?

My ultimate goal is to get accepted into medical school and become a pediatrician or neurologist! However, my plans for the near future are not set in stone yet, but I'm excited for whatever God has in store for me!

Most exciting time in APU?

I know a lot of people say this, but it's hard to pick just one. So, for now, I'd say that my most exciting time while at APU is a collection of all the little things: walking home from the library at 3 a.m., going on countless late night food runs, bawling my eyes out during chapel, having dinner/game/movie nights with my friends, or even just walking from East to West Campus and talking to/seeing a familiar face. My time at APU has been life-changing, and I am so thankful that for the past 4 years, I have been able to walk alongside others who were willing to share their stories with me.

Also, shoutout to my friends (you know who you are)! You've all made my time at APU more than worthwhile, and I can't thank you guys enough!

Advice for continuing students?

Don't be afraid to take risk. I wish I had learned this earlier on.

We have all been blessed with limitless potential. The thing about this, then, is that it implies development into something greater. So, in order to reach that potential, we must first learn to grow out of our comfort zones. When you take these risks, most of the time, there will undoubtedly be fear and discomfort. However, in those moments of vulnerability, stop and think. Everything you are going through is preparing you for what you asked God for - yes, that's a quote from Steve Harvey. :)

Shaina Loveless

What is your name and major?

My name is Shaina Loveless and I am a Chemistry major.

Three words to describe yourself?

My junior year, I was an RA and got to go on Walkabout. I spent a week in Yosemite and was able to bond with so many RAs and enjoy nature! It was definitely one of my favorite places to visit!

Advice for continuing students?

Don't be afraid to connect with your professors! The professors I have had in the chemistry department have supported me and helped me prepare for grad school. They want to get to know you, so go to office hours and make connections!

Andy Li

What is your name and major?

My name is Andy Li and I am a Biology major.

Three words to describe yourself?

Fun, Persevering, Easy-Going.

Plans in the future?

I am taking two gap years to get a Master of Public Health (MPH) in epidemiology at Loma Linda University and eventually, going to medical school and becoming a physician.

Most exciting time in APU?

Research! Definitely research (shout out to Team Prosser)! I learned so much through S2S research, and most importantly, it is the subject that I am passionate about!

Advice for continuing students?

Your professors are your best friends; they want to help you to succeed! So, don't be shy, go to office hours, get questions answered. I learned so much just by going to office hours throughout my undergrad. I remember in Microbiology, I went to Dr. Richart's office hour for a question, but we ended up having a conversation about certain European descent are immune to HIV, which is mind-blowing! I would have never got that if I didn't go to office hours.

Jackson Lent-Koop

What is your name and major?

My name is Jackson Lent-Koop and I am a Biology Major with a Molecular Emphasis with a minor in Honors Humanities.

Three words to describe yourself?

If I were to describe myself in three words, I would say that I am passionate, driven, and curious.

Plans in the future?

I will be working as a Research Associate in the Priceman Lab at City of Hope for the next two to three years. I hope to use this experience to bolster my convictions to ultimately pursue an MD/PhD.

Most exciting time in APU?

My most exciting time at APU was the everyday conversation with students and faculty. Nowhere else have I found myself so supported in my pursuit as an academic and follower of Christ.

Advice for continuing students?

My number one word of advice for new students is to strive to love the learning for its own sake. Doing so will make studying much more enjoyable and will help people enjoy the process of achieving their goals as much as the accomplishments themselves.

Tonhi Gailey

What is your name and major?

My name is Tonhi Gailey, and I am a Biochemistry and Honors Humanities double major.

Three words to describe yourself?

Funny, Capable, Mom-ish

Plans in the future?

I plan to get my PhD and pursue research in pharmacogenomics—particularly in relation to mental illnesses, disorders, and addiction—by studying the relationship between genetics and medication to develop personalized therapeutics. I also envision myself having finally figured out how to bake bread (the one thing that I, for some reason, still cannot figure out how to bake properly).

Most exciting time in APU?

As cheesy as it is, the most exciting moments I've had at APU are any of the ones that involve my friends. It's amazing how they can make any time the best time. From our cross-country roadtrips to the nights where we cried over tests, assignments, and projects, they're the people that shaped my APU experience and made it the best time of my life. So yeah, even though we've had some exciting adventures, I would say my favorite moments were the ones that involved hanging out, talking, and just vibing with one another. Especially if it involved a fire or stars. Extra points if there were both.

Advice for continuing students?

Honestly, my advice would be to do what you want to do (though within reason, since you should definitely be smart about that). Join the lab you're interested in, even if you feel like it doesn't exactly align with your career goals. Apply for the job that you want, even if you don't feel confident. Get involved with that club or extracurricular you aren't sure you have time for. Go to church even when you feel like you should take advantage of Sunday to study. Make friends with the professors, especially the ones who scare you. Go on spontaneous trips and learn to study in the car. Scream at the top of your lungs in the middle of the night outside when you need that stress relief. Entrust your stuff to a friend and nap in the library when you're tired, even if you get weird looks. And most importantly, be ok with saying no to things because you want to. The four years you have in college are so long, yet so short. Fill it with the things that matter.

I remember getting ready for a music department concert and hearing musicians warm up on their instruments. I was in awe, it was amazing to hear music so skillfully played, and the concert itself was fantastic!

Advice for continuing students?

In general, make a few good friends your freshman year! The friends I made during my freshman year remain my friends to this day and are blessings beyond compare. Most exciting time in APU?

One of the most exciting experiences at APU for me was at the last APU Football game. I was not originally going on the trip to South Dakota to play Black Hills State for the last away game of the season (last game in APU History now). However, 10 minutes before the buses were supposed to leave, my coach called me saying he had a spot for me on the bus and wondered if I were still ready. I of course said yes, ran to my apartment from work, and grabbed my soaking wet clothes (they were in the washer) and packed for the trip. The best part of this experience was everyone chanting my name as I got on the bus. It was an experience I will never forget, and by far, my favorite experience at APU.

Advice for continuing students?

At times coding can be frustrating, but if you stick with it, it will all just click. Computer Science is super rewarding when you get to see all of your hard work function correctly on the computer screen! Taking small breaks is also a really helpful thing to do.

Jacob Cramer

What is your name and major?

My name is Jacob Cramer and I am a Computer Science major.

Three words to describe yourself?

Leader, Energetic, Trustworthy.

Plans in the future?
