Congratulations to these STEM faculty grant awardees!
APU Strategic Plan, Renewal Grand Initiative 1 states the awarding of up to four President’s Faculty Scholarship/Department Enhancement Grants that promote increased investment in research to solidify APU’s position as a R2 Doctoral Research University. The recipients of the first year’s grants include the following two projects:
Kevin Huang and Jon Milhon, Department of Biology and Chemistry. “An interdisciplinary strategy employing spirocyclic compounds as anti-cancer drug candidates to inhibit the p53-MDM2 interaction.” $36,672
Bradley McCoy, Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics; Elijah Roth, Department of Biology and Chemistry; Tom Allbaugh, Writing Program and Department of English; Sharon McCathern, Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics; Marian Saleh, Department of Biology and Chemistry; and Kevin Huang, Department of Biology and Chemistry. “Pilot Study for Effectiveness of Learning Assistants on Student Engagement.” $30,000
In addition, the proposal, "APUSat: A Student Developed CubeSat Program" submitted by Dr. Jim Johansen (Engineering & Computer Science) has been funded by the California Space Grant Consortium in the amount of $15,000. The APU CubeSat program aims to design and build a CubeSat that has specific functionalities such as navigation aiding, communication missions, remote sensing and characterization, asset tracking, satellite imagery, and geolocation of fires. This funding will cover equipment costs for the satellite ground station as well as stipends for undergraduate researchers in this project.
Congratulations again to Drs. Huang, Milhon, McCoy, Roth, McCathern, Saleh, Johansen and Allbaugh! We look forward to learning more about these projects.
