2019 Science & Faith Event Highlights

Shalom 2019

Shalom in a Changing Climate

On January 23 , many faculty, staff, students, alumni and visitors attended "Shalom in a Changing Climate: The science, theology and practice of creation care in the Anthropocene." Climate change is an important environmental issue that has gained increasing awareness. Dr. Katharine Hayhoe started off by walking us through the various aspects of climate change. Dr. Steven Bouma-Prediger then spoke on earthkeeping as discipleship, while Ms. Annie MacAulay talked about the implications of climate change in ocean ecology. The audience asked many intriguing questions on causes, responsibilities, and next steps. The room was energized and engaged with these complex issues. We are glad that several organizations were able to join us as well: American Scientific Affiliation, Canyon City Environmental Project, Eden Project, Mountain & Sea Adventures, SoCal A Rocha. It is our hope that the CRIS Science & Faith events will catalyze deep conversations in and outside of the classroom, on and off campus. In light of the many unanswered questions during the Q&A session, Dr. Charles Chen (cpchen@apu.edu) has willingly made himself available for any science-related inquiries. Let us know any comments and feedback at cris@apu.edu. The event video will be posted on the APU CRIS website shortly. SEE Luncheon

SEE Women's Luncheon

Support-Encourage-Empower (SEE) Women's Luncheon is an event two years in the making. CRIS partnered with the Office of Women's Development (OWD) to host this sold-out event. More than 80 students, staff, faculty and community guests heard Dr. Hayhoe's journey in science, career, faith and vast challenges she faces daily. Deep appreciation goes to Dr. Elaine Richardson (Director, OWD), for her shared vision and support in making this event successful. Stay tuned for the next SEE Luncheon!
