Faculty Feature

Dr. James Yeh

Associate Professor, Department of Engineering and Computer Science

1. Can you tell us your home department and how long have you been a faculty member at APU?

I currently serve as the Interim Chair of the Department of Engineering and Computer Science; it has been a pleasure to be a faculty member in the ECS Department since 2016.

2. What classes are you teaching this year?

I am teaching the Digital Logic System (ENGR 240) course, Internet-of-Things (CS/ENGR 452) course, and the Engineering Senior Design I and II (ENGR 470, ENGR 480) courses.

3. What is your area of research/teaching and how did you get interested in this area?

I conduct research in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) area. I got started doing embedded programming when I taught at Cal Poly Pomona for a year. During my first year at APU, I worked with Dr. Rick Sturdivant on a Himalayan Nepal Hydroelectric project that used IoT. Recently, I am also doing some research in Machine Learning.

4. When and how did you get interested in studying Engineering (or science in general)?

My father always nurtured an appreciation for the sciences since I was little. He got two blackboards - they seem huge at the time - one for my brother and one for me. He would draw different scientific discoveries on the board. In high school during the home PC revolution, I enjoyed learning and writing programs. I later went into electrical engineering in college.

5. What are some of the things you most enjoy being in APU?

I enjoy teaching. I feel it is in teaching that I gain a deeper understanding of the topic as well as learning new things. I enjoy conducting research with students, through which, exploring new areas and creating new devices and systems. And I love working with my wonderful colleagues in our department.

6. What are some fun things you like to do?

I enjoy skiing, hiking, calligraphy, and most recently, playing the electric bass.

7. Anything else you would like the STEM community to know about you?

I am serving as an elder in my local church and it keeps me quite busy.
