Faculty Feature

Dr. Lu Ruan

Associate Professor, Department of Engineering and Computer Science

1. Can you tell us your home department and how long have you been a faculty at APU?

My home department is the Department of Engineering and Computer Science. I have been a faculty at APU for less than a month!

2. What are the classes you teach?

I am teaching three classes this fall semester: CS160 Discrete Structures, CS290 Database Management Systems, and CS430 Artificial Intelligence.

3. What is your area of research/teaching and how did you get interested in this area?

My research area is computer networks. I am especially interested in Internet structure, Internet routing, and Internet performance. I got interested in Internet research because the Internet is ubiquitous and has changed the way we live, work, learn, and play. It is important to understand how data packets are routed over the Internet and develop ways to improve Internet performance.

4. When and how did you get interested in studying computer science (or science in general)?

I chose the computer science major when I entered college because I enjoyed mathematics, logical thinking, and problem solving.

5. What are some of the things you most enjoy being in APU?

What I enjoy the most so far is the faculty/staff here at APU. I have (virtually) met many people inside and outside my department. All of them are very friendly, caring, and ready to offer help. I feel welcomed and supported at APU.

6. What are some fun things you like to do?

I enjoy listening to music and traveling.

7. Anything else you would like the STEM community to know about you?

I grew up in Beijing, China. I came to the U.S. in 1997 to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota. I lived in the Midwest for 23 years before moving to California. My husband Leo and I have a 13-year old daughter, Faith.
