NSF S-STEM Grant

A team of CLAS faculty (Dr. James Yeh-ECS, Principal Investigator, Dr. Bradley “Peanut” McCoy-MPS, Co-Investigator, Dr. Louise Huang-CLAS/CRIS, STEM Administrator & Liaison) in collaboration with Dr. Christopher Newman-Higher Education as the Educational Researcher, have recently been awarded the National Science Foundation S-STEM Grant. This 5-year funding of $649,987 will provide scholarships for promising STEM aspirants with high unmet financial need, who are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics. Specific activities include: faculty and peer mentoring, supplemental instruction, an existing STEM-focused Success Coach delivering career guidance, tutoring, as well as summer research with faculty mentors and internship opportunities. A distinguishing feature of this project is the regular family gatherings designed to include and equip the scholars’ families with relevant information that will help support their students towards degree completion in a fostered learning community.
