Music or Map Doodle

Materials needed:

  • copy of sheet music or map

  • pen and pencils

  • markers--colored sharpies work well

  • circle templates of various sizes (or other shapes)

Steps:

  1. Choose background paper (map or music sheet)

    1. Trim paper if you wish to have a smaller size--cut off outside margins

    2. Trace outlines of your shapes in pencil. Experiment with overlap, placement, size. Trace a minimum of five shapes onto your paper.

      • consider balance, repetition, unity, variety

    3. When your design is complete, outline shapes with sharpie.

    4. Apply color and pattern within the shapes, using the design on the sheet to help create some of your pattern.

    5. Guiding rules with color: keep it to "4 friendly colors" (too many makes it seem chaotic) OR try a color scheme:

      • primary

      • secondary

      • warm

      • cool

      • monochromatic

      • complementary

      • analogous
