  • warm up: coral reefs

  • drawing using the properties of an item

    • observations

    • riffing

    • practice coral

  • warm up: strange fungi

  • drawing using contour lines and noteability

  • choose a landscape 12 x 18

    • fore, mid, back

    • add building if time

  • warm up: inspirational moodboard

    • 1) beautiful landscapes around the world

    • 2) strange landscapes from around the world

    • 3) architecture from around the world

      • upload all 3 to google classroom

  • pre-instruction: draw a face

    • use a reference photo

    • keep the expression on the reference neutral--no smiles or wierd expressions

    • do your best work at this moment

    • draw on drawing paper and fill the paper (make the face large)

    • drawing must be of a realistic human, no cartooning or anime

    • take at least 20 - 30 minutes

  • if you finish, you may free draw

start with pre-instruction face

(set up all 3 moodboard to fill time bc I was out--might not want to do all three next time)

Instead, do the moodboards for landscapes and then do the contour line right away

contour line, then divide in 4 sectors (half way vertically and horizontally), then transfer--looking for key properties or characteristics

doing the landscape this way seems to be HUGELY effective--gives us the ability to practice while making a template that we can transform into the layers needed for the piece

Using the properties worked REALLY well--need to make a video

adding to the foreground--not as successful b/c didn't make large. Especially when adding the bugs if they have extra time, need to chat about making big

Doing the peer edit at this point doesn't make sense b/c we are

  • add coral to foreground of your landscape

    • large

    • overlaps other items

    • bottom of the paper

  • warm up: microscopic bacteria

  • Review: how to peer edit

    • Austin's butterfly

    • discuss key points

  • peer edit

  • Revise drawing

    • upload to google classroom

1st hour

  • warm up: review how to do a peer edit well

    • edit trees for properties

    • revise

    • upload to google classroom

3rd hour

  • warm up: microscopic bacteria

  • Review: how to peer edit

    • Austin's butterfly

    • discuss key points

    • draw a tree

not sure it went well having everyone choose their own tree

kids were very creative when we did the exercises like this, but didn't always follow through with fresh new things when they were given time to work. maybe come up with a way to use each item that we create?

starting with properties together and then ideas together went really well. not all students transferred this well when they wanted to do their own pieces. might need more practice, or another way to remind them to go through the steps--maybe need sketch notes or some kind of form they need to fill out to make them do the brainstorming before they jump in. too many forgot everything we'd done up to that point...

  • warm up: upload tree drawing

  • steps to be creative

    • patterns and properties

    • practice with tree, insect, fungus

3rd hour

  • warm up: draw tree from Friday

  • peer edit, revise, upload

  • steps to be creative

    • patterns and properties

    • practice with tree, insect, fungus

Homework: due Friday 11/14

1) watch this video

2) fill in the note sheet--upload

  • warm up: what are the properties of this flowering plant?

  • draw a plant using your observations

  • creativity practice--how could we change this plant to make it new?

  • acrylic demo--use for backgrounds and for textures

  • warm up: media review

  • transforming the drawing to the layered landscape

    • understanding the layers

    • using properties for background

    • using size and detail

    • using placement

  • work time for landscapes

homework for face due tomorrow!

1) watch this video

2) fill in the note sheet--upload

  • warm up: how did it go? What could be better?

  • face notes due, go over together

  • begin drawing using canon--due Friday

Links for drawing the face

    • this would be good as a video that kids could access

    • not many kids did the homework with the notetaking--if it's important enough to know, might need more lessons like this and do them in class
