Getting started: 2 pronged approach

Purpose: In this section of the course, we will be reviewing how to draw and acquiring new techniques to improve your drawing. We will also work on how to generate ideas for your fantasy world.

Skill work:

    • How to draw using observation: proportion, measurement, angles, plumb lines.

    • Learning how to combine ideas and images to create new works of art

Drawing tips for the face and features

Overview of project: In 7th grade you will create a being, along with the creature’s home world and dwelling. Your being must be humanoid (human-like). You may develop a superhero, a demi-god, or an alien, as long as your figure shows an understanding of the proportions of the human face and body.

Skill work/content:

    • How to draw using observation: proportion, measurement, angles, plumb lines.

    • Correct proportions of the human face.

    • Facial features.

    • Correct proportions of the human figure.

    • Human figure in action/foreshortening.

    • Using composition to create strong works of art.

    • Creating the illusion of space using foreground, mid-ground, background and other techniques.

    • Using value to create the illusion of space.

    • Rendering value using color.

    • Learning how to combine ideas and images to create new works of art.

    • Using plaster bandage to create three dimensional objects.

    • Building forms using newspaper.

3 Products, possibly 4 if time:

    1. Drawing of your character’s face, frontal view with background

    2. Cardboard-layer fantasy landscape or cityscape of creature’s home environment

    3. 3 dimensional bottle sculpture dwelling or 3 dimensional face

    4. If time: Drawing or painting of your character in an action pose, with background
