Mass Combat Fight
Here's how armies fight.
Before the Battle
Adjustments get made for terrain, ambush, fortifications and such.
Battle Phases
Tactics Phase: Decide which tactic your army is going use. This tactic applies for the entire fight.
Ranged Phase: Typically only happens once at the beginning of a battle.
Melee Phase: Repeat this one until the battle is over.
Quick Reference
Offense Check: d20 + OM of the army
Damage: Offense check result - defending army's DV
Morale Check: d20 + leader's Cha mod + morale score
Strategy
Each round, the leader can pick a new strategy for his army. Moving one step in either direction is automatic, otherwise DC20 morale check.
Attacking and Taking Damage
There is no turn order. Each army attacks and deals damage each round. Quick Reference shows the rolls. A Natural 20 always does at least 1 point of damage, a Natural 1 always misses. If there are multiple armies, you decide which army is your target. There is no facing, rear, position, archer army is behind the shield wall army, etc.
Rout
An army flees when HP are reduced to less than CR. The enemy gets one final attack as the army flees. A Leader can stop a Rout with a DC15 Morale check.
Victory and Defeat
Victory: Make a Loyalty check to learn a new tactic. If successful, gain +1 morale.
Rout: Reset hit points to the army's CR. Morale -1. Requires a Loyalty check during the kingdom's Upkeep phase before this army can be made to fight again.
Defeated (0 hit points): The army is gone. Reduce the kingdom's Stability, Economy, and Loyalty by 2.
Recovery
An inactive army heals all it's hit points after 1 month. Each day an army spends at rest (no movement), it regains HP equal to it's CR. Each day of rest, a Loyalty check against your kingdom DC, the army heals an additional HP equal to CR.
PCs in Battle
PCs don't fight in army battles. Rather there may be special things that the PCs need to do as the battle rages: Defeat the opposing general, turn over the hurricane generating artifact, etc. The PCs actions can grant a +4 to -4 bonus to their armies.
Powerful wizards can affect a battle with some spells (earthquake, control weather). Figure that out later.
