House Rules: Alternate Chase Rules

About the Setting: The setting is not more defined than "Cyberpunk". You're free to make of it what you want. You're a genetic experiment that turned you into a orc? Fine. You're an ultra-liberal given miracle powers from your worship of Mother Earth? Fine. What ever idea you come up with probably works.

The game will be taking place in The Front Range. You're a group of semi-mercenaries being hired by various folks to do various unofficial tasks: Corporate sabotage, hostage rescue, industrial espionage, security detail, etc.

Making A Character

Novice characters, using the standard rules for making a character, plus the optional stuff from the setting. Take your gear from the basic book or the setting book - but give it a cool Cyberpunk name.

Do make sure that you have at least one Hacker in the group. They're pretty important. And probably a healer.

Magic Comes to Town

Things were already pretty drek - governments being puppets of the corporations, a complete separation of the wealthy and the poor - and then magic came to town. It happened overnight. One day folks are killing each other with Widowmakers, the next they are throwing around eldritch bolts of energy.

At first, the Corps were excited. They rounded up those with the new powers and started doing testing of all sorts. The Corps interest quickly faded though when they could find no way to recreate, spread or even understand the powers. If they can't monetize and control it, then the Corps are against it. When it was discovered that a very high percentage of those with magic were coming from Utah and from people living outside the Cores, cries of "Satan arming his minions for Armageddon" became the explanation for magic. Magic and those who practice it were excluded from Corp society. The Conurbanation of SLC devolved to one giant dreg.

That's where things stand today. Those who practice magic gained the power on that one fateful night and were pushed to the edges of society. No new outbursts have happened since then.

Claudette's Research

First off a correction: Claudette was not surprised to learn that the samples in the safe were alive. She already knew that.

The Research on Claudette's datapad:

Claudette had come into some recent extraterrestrial mineral samples. She doesn't seem to know where the samples came from - that seems to be some shady business.

Initial tests turned up a two major surprises:

1) The samples contained some sort of organic life form. She sent her readings off to a company called Gaia Tech for more analysis. There seems to have been some sort of setback at Gaia Tech and Claudette was considering restarting that research herself.

2) Spectrometer tests of the samples matched samples from an earlier Blue Sky research project known as Project Phoenix. Either these samples were from the same asteroid as the Project Phoenix asteroid or they have come from the same place.

Claudette had done a little research on Project Phoenix. A wunderkind by the name of Korrigan had come up with a promising discovery. She tried to find out what the discovery was but that was a closely held Blue Sky secret.

The research was so promising that two different VPs claimed Korrigan as their own: men by the name of Pritchard and LaFevre. Unfortunately Korrigan's research didn't turn out as promising as it initially looked, Project Phoenix was shut down, and it ended the careers of Pritchard and LaFevre at Blue Sky.

Wrap Up

The PCs contact Korrigan's avatar within the MMO and warn him that Pritchard and LaFevre are on the hunt for the Project Phoenix meteor - a meteor that unlocks arcane abilities to those who ingest the ore. The avatar asks the PCs to secure the meteorite and keep it away from the two Vice Presidents.

The PCs get the rock, but not without Shade and Jacob gaining a bit of paranoia after ingesting meteor ore. They decide to lock the meteor away in a room that requires 2 of 3 keys to open it.
